The Rest of My Accessories

by admin on January 19, 2011, under Wedding Wear

I’ve talked a bit about some of my wedding day accessories—my veil and the earrings that my aunt is letting me borrow. As for the rest of my jewelry, well, that was actually my first official wedding purchase!

Awhile back I was searching through Etsy (I love that site—I still can’t believe it was founded by a twenty-something guy!), and I came across Sweet Findings 4 You’s shop. I really love her pieces, and I knew exactly which ones I wanted. I purchased this necklace and bracelet set, and I love pulling them out when I think about what I’ll be wearing on our wedding day!

I love the combination of the pearls with the flower detail. And even better—I was looking at pictures of my cousin’s wedding (she wore the same earrings that I’ll be borrowing), and I think the earrings should work out really well. And if I end up mixing metals, I’m pretty sure no one will notice (or care!).

Now I just need to remember to take off my ever-present watch (I’ve had the same watch since high school—it’s functionally great, but aesthetically not something I want in pictures), especially as I’m pretty sure other people will keep track of the time just fine for me that day.

What kind of jewelry are you wearing for your wedding?

Bridesmaids’ Dresses: to Match or Not to Match…

by admin on December 26, 2010, under Wedding Wear

I am so torn about bridesmaids’ dresses. I am having a fairly large bridal party because no one told me about the 50:1 (guests: bridesmaid) rule. Under this rule, I should only have one, possibly two bridesmaids. I have SIX! That being said, I have no idea how to dress them for the big day. I kind of miss the days of mandatory matching bridesmaids’ dresses! There are SOOO many options.

1. The traditional matching dresses (I LOVE THESE!)

{source}

2. The same style in different colors

{source}

3. The same color but with a choices of two or three styles

4. The same color family, no prints, but generally bridesmaid’s choice

5. Color scheme but complete bridesmaid’s choice

6. Matching prints

7. Mismatched prints

I am not sure what dresses to pick, but I do have a few criteria:

  • Costs less than $100
  • Short and lightweight, since it is a daytime beach wedding
  • Light colored (in the pink, champagne, or blush family)
  • Preferably not strapless

I really love the look of matching dresses, but I love the idea of letting my bridesmaids pick their own dresses. I feel like if they pick their own dresses they are more likely to wear them again. Also, my bridesmaids are all such different shapes and sizes that I wouldn’t know how to pick a dress that would look good on all of them. (I definitely want everyone to look A-MAZING on my big day; I am not one of those brides! Hehe.) On the other hand, because my bridesmaids look so different I kind of like the idea of having dresses that make them look more unified. I feel like that makes them more special.

Additionally, three of my bridesmaids have already said they hate pink and will need a lot of help finding a dress. They made it clear that they are more than happy to wear a pink dress for me—they just don’t know how to pick a good pink dress. My sister basically laughed at me when I asked her if she would prefer to pick her own dress because she hasn’t worn a dress in years and claims to have never worn pink!

It seems like my best bet would be to pick two or three styles in the same color (family?) and let the bridesmaids choose the ones they like best. I feel like this really addresses the majority of my concerns and my bridesmaids’ concerns. The only problem is, where can I find two or three dresses in the same color that cost less than $100? I am under the impression, based on a very preliminary search, that I won’t be able to find dresses under $100 at a bridal/bridesmaids’ dress store…i.e., David’s Bridal, Dessy, or J. Crew. Am I wrong?

David’s Bridal Spring 2011 Line

by admin on December 26, 2010, under Wedding Wear

I know I owe you guys photos of our finished STDs (which I can’t wait to share), but you’ll have to hold off a little bit longer…until I can find my missing camera cord. ;)

I got an email yesterday from David’s announcing that they had new styles available.  I personally had a fantastic David’s experience, but from what I gather it really depends on what store you go to. Either way, I plan on talking about it a lot more after the holidays, so let’s wait until then . :)

For now, I’d love to share some of these dresses with you guys! I was pleasantly surprised when looking over the 2011 line. There are some very fashion forward dresses and a few that I like quite a bit (but not too much—not more than my dress, of course). If you guys are in the midst of dress shopping (good luck!) and haven’t given up yet (just kidding), you might want to look over a few of these lovelies!

All photos are screen shots from the David’s Bridal website.

Here are my favorites. The entire line can be seen here.

Epaulets: From Military to Everybody

by admin on November 4, 2010, under Wedding Wear

Note from Bridezilla: Street-fashion can stir up wedding inspiration. Look out for Nadine, our Stylezilla and wedding blogger whose uncovering the latest trends and revealing them well before they hit the wedding world.

Military-inspired trends call for armor-like details.  Keep the edge with metals that sparkle, but take the boot camp look and transform it to classic Captain-style with a little epaulet embellishment.

Natalie Portman in Babette Epaulette

Disheveled edge courtesy swathes of liquid chains.  High-voltage glittering rocks or sweeps of fringe, the epaulet is no longer a simple shoulder adornment, it’s a statement.  Layered upon bare skin, the jeweled sheathing draws a crowd and then it’s taken back to its traditional outerwear roots tossed over a strong jacket.

Harlots and Scarlets

Babette Epaulet by Seville Michelle Anastos, leading creator in the epaulet revolution, has been seen on fans including Beyonce and Alicia Keys.  The classic epaulet, the thin piece of material with a thick border of blunt-cut fringe, gets an update in the Harlots and Scarlets collection with long, thin, multi-hued delicate strands cascading off heavy metal chains.  The theme may be military, but it doesn’t have to be literal.

Babette Epaulette Harlots and Scarlets

Light as a Feather

The airy touch of feathers steal from the boho and indie scenes and lend any style a touch of playfulness, which is perfect for days when you just don’t know what to do with an epaulet.  With earth tones, the feathers provide a hint of hippie, but when paired with shocks of color and bold patterns, the captivating scent of a fashion innovator lingers nearby.

Big, Bold and Beautiful

Go above and beyond the military effect with an eye-popping, outfit-making, bobbled-up piece like those from Mayzani.  In addition to pumping up your fashion, they might just buff up your arms.  Taking heftiness into account, these are for the serious epaulet lovers.  However, confidence is everything when it comes to pulling off fashion be it trends, classics or obscurities.  With military-inspired looks, now is the time to flex those fashion muscles!

Hair Accessories as Art

by admin on October 24, 2010, under Wedding Wear

Take any look, be it casual jeans and tee to all-out night at the opera, and transform it into a work of art.  The basic ponytail can get an overhaul with the simple addition of a well-thought out accessory.  Instead of a basic bobby pin sweeping the stray locks from your face, tap into your creative side and explore the many avenues of hair art.  Swapping out one standard piece of the outfit puzzle can open up a flood of fresh ideas that may spark vast changes in your life; anything from boosting self-confidence to channeling a new level of daily ingenuity.

Leather and Lace – Mixed Medium Art

Strong leather, delicate lace and a smattering of eye-catching studs come together in a rich and styled aesthetic that is more polished than tough.  The blended textures are so becoming you could easily wear them from a family brunch to an art house showing without batting an eye; it all lies in the confidence of the wearer.

Jennifer Behr brings forth “21st century crowns.”  Fashioned by hand, these dazzling show-stoppers have been popping up on celebrities left and right.  The Lace Voilette with Spider Web is featured on the left with the Studded Voilette on Leather Headband taking the spotlight on the right.

Ka-Pow! – Pop Art

Channel the 1960s with this Lichtenstein-style, comic book-inspired, pop art fascinator.  Not for the shrinking violet, these sparkling statements bring out the animated personality of those who dare to wear them.  For maximum impact, layer the artful piece over a vibrant wig or take the opportunity to tread into cosmetic overload territory.

Etsy artist Janine Basil is the life behind these power-packed pieces.  Delivering a bold punch of energy to any outfit, the funky hair trophies found in Janine’s shop are an amusing way to liven up your wardrobe.

The Chain Gang – Industrial Art

Make your hair feel hardcore by draping your head in chains.  Dial up the rock’ n’ roll as you bring on an air of gritty roughness; a flavor of the underground nightlife.  Add ultra-cool to any outfit by bringing it to street level with edgy metallic accents.

The designing sisters of Litter SF, Rachael Mann and Mackenzie Burdick, are the mistresses of all things metal.  Through upcycled jewelry, their line offers eco-friendly, yet street chic finds for anyone looking to complement their style with a bit of grungy glam.

Silver Fox

Hi, bees!

So now that all of you have had a sneak peek at the Ostrich dress, you may be wondering what Mr. Ostrich’s ensemble will be as we stand beside each other on the beach.

When we first got engaged, we knew one thing right away—no tuxes!

Mr. O and his best men would look like penguins standing in formal attire along the shore. We wanted to find an outfit for Mr. O that went along with our beach-chic vibe and one that he liked and felt comfy in. A comfy, cute groom = a happy groom! :)

We figured a light silver gray color would look charming on Mr. Ostrich. He has a skinny navy suit from Banana Republic’s Monogram Collection that looks smokin’ on him, so a skinny, silver gray suit was what we were on the hunt for—kind of like Ashton Kutcher’s suit in those Canon commercials:

So the search began.

And like my dress search, Mr. Ostrich lucked out and found his favorite suit within a matter of days. And like his blushing bride, he ordered it online!

Here it is, my darling bees—the Italian Cotton Ludlow Suit by—who else?—J. Crew.

And since we’re going to be on the beach, Mr. Ostrich and his best men (who are wearing the same outfit, minus the jacket!) will be rockin’ skinny navy ties, vintage brown leather plaque belts, and some cool, off white Sperry sneakers. Mr. O is all about his sneaks and thought this would be a thoughtful touch. I agree!

How about you, stylish bees? What cool threads are your favorite guys wearing on your special day?

Queen of Style: Bridal Gowns Go Cocktail Hour

by admin on September 27, 2010, under Wedding Wear

Marchesa short dress spring 2011

The elegant mini dress is no longer reserved for cocktail hour.  Just about every collection prancing down the runway at New York Fashion Week’s spring 2011 showing featured at least one short bridal gown proving that though tradition holds strong, there is still plenty of room to play.

And play, they did.  With the bridezilla mantra, “I’ve never heard of ‘Here Comes the Groom;’ it’s my wedding!” freshly ringing in their heads from a marathon of WEtv’s Bridezillas, top designers went all out creating some major bridal eye-catchers.  Case in point, the cheeky (in more ways than one) little number above by Marchesa.

The “It’s about me and me only” Dress

Want to guarantee that no one misses your moment as The Almighty and All-Powerful Supreme Ruler of the Universe and…I mean beautiful blushing bride?  Take the spotlight, and I don’t mean just one, but all the spotlights in the venue, as you make your grand entrance in a show-stopping number like the glamorous Oscar de la Renta piece on the left or the Monique Lhuillier creation on the right.

Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier bridal spring 2011

The “I’m not a normal looking girl.  I’m absolutely stunning” Dress

Stun the crowd as you dominate the aisle in a demurely detailed bridal frock.  You’re not the average bride causing family and friends to well at the eyes.  You’re stealing the show and causing jaws to drop as you bring the party to the altar.  Melissa Sweet by Priscilla of Boston opts for softly swept, over-sized ruffles while Victoria Nicole keeps it neat, tidy and fitted to perfection.

Melissa Sweet and Victoria Nicole bridal spring 2011

The “I always get what I want” Dress

Many bridezilla’s seem to share the battle cry of, “It’s my day!”  Keep it your day and not necessarily your dress’ day by bringing the wow factor in an understated way.  Flawless construction, as demonstrated by these two Amsale wedding dresses, will cause every neck to crane.  The minimalist design grabs your guest’s attention then allows the focus to travel straight to you, where it should stay for the rest of your day.
