Making the Invite: Paper Samples Are Here!

by admin on January 14, 2012, under Wedding Stationery

After working with my Lil Boa on a couple of drafts for the invites, I started hunting down the paper I would use for them.

Cue Cards & Pockets—I loved their large selection of colors and immediately ordered a couple of free samples to get to see the colors up close.

I ordered six samples in white, light purple, and dark purple in both the shimmer and matte types of paper. My actual selections were: matte (Snow White, Grape, and Purple) and shimmer (Crystal, Amethyst, and Violette). I would like to pick one white shade, one light purple shade, and one deep purple shade.

Matte shades are on the left and shimmer on the right.

I really liked all the colors I had chosen but LOVED the Violette shimmer sample! I’m definitely including it on the invites, either as an invitation mat or in the envelope. I’m unsure of whether to print the invite on the shimmer or matte white. And have yet to pick the other purple colored paper (it will be either the Grape or Amethyst).

Should I go all shimmer or all matte on the invites, or should I mix it up using matte invites and envelopes with a shimmer mat, or shimmer invites and envelopes but a matte backer, or…etc., etc.

Have any of you used Cards & Pockets supplies for your invites?

Did you use matte or shimmer paper? A combination of both?

Help?

The Minks Pull a 180 (Goodbye Cupcakes, Hello Cake!)

by admin on January 12, 2012, under Wedding Fayre

There’s no point in dragging this out. Yesterday, I wrote about trying to decide between cupcakes and mini cupcakes for our wedding. It all sounded so cute and fun, but we changed our minds. We want cake. Wait. I want cake.

This is one of those situations where Mr. Mink has been totally easy-going. He doesn’t care if we have cupcakes or a traditional cake. He just wants to get to the part where we have a couple tastings! Every time I started taking about cake and cupcakes, Mr. Mink would joke that we were going to have his mother’s red velvet cake for our wedding cake and we could smoosh my mother’s chocolate chip cookie fingers (almost shaped like biscotti) into the sides. I finally stopped talking and just looked at the inspiration pictures I saved to my Pinterest boards. Almost every image was of a cake.

I think I was swayed by two things. First, the pictures of couples cutting their cakes are appealing to me. I know we could cut a one tiered cake or a cupcake, but amidst the non-traditional decisions we’ve made, I like the idea of doing something traditional. Second, I love the variety of cake designs. Some of the cakes out there are works of art.

Between us, we know quite a few people who make cakes, cupcakes, and all sorts of sweet treats. Deciding against cupcakes simplified the dessert decision in a big way. Our list of bakers to investigate shortened dramatically.

I decided that it would be best to show potential bakers some pictures of cakes I liked and realized that there’s another decision to be made: fondant vs. buttercream.

I’m sure you know the pros and cons of using fondant. Fondant provides a smooth, even finish. It’s a great base for flowers or intricate designs. Some say they hate the taste of fondant, but I read that there are different kinds of fondant. Apparently, the most readily available brand is the one that doesn’t taste great.

Buttercream, on the other hand, is soft and often allows for texture on cakes. Plenty of bakers can smooth buttercream into looking a lot like fondant, though. I think most people agree that buttercream tastes pretty great.

I loved many of the sleek, simple cakes I saw that were covered in fondant. I definitely wanted something that looked sweet and not too fussy.

I loved the idea of being able to add a design that might get lost on a buttercream cake.

On the other hand, I find the texture on buttercream cakes so appealing. I think they look romantic and they’d fit into the look of my vineyard wedding beautifully. In most cases, it seems as though buttercream cakes are less expensive.

I might wait until I see some local bakers’ portfolios to make a final decision on this one, but I’m curious about taste.

Have you had a good tasting fondant cake? Do you have a preference when it comes to fondant vs. buttercream?

Beautifying My Hands

by admin on January 7, 2012, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Hive, I have to tell you that I have never for a minute cared about my nails. Sure, I’ve gotten some manicures in my life for special events! But on a daily basis, my nails are not treated with respect. If I’m being 100% honest, I’m a nail picker. I say this because I don’t really bite my nails (although I will if they are breaking). Instead I pick at the cuticles (I know, gross). It’s a bad habit that got started during stressful schooling.

So I don’t know what has happened to me lately, but I have become completely and utterly obsessed with my nails! Like, I have literally acquired about seven new nail polish colors in the past two months. And not only have I been playing with color, but I’ve been playing with techniques as well!

Beautifying My Hands : wedding beauty long island Nail2b

Thanks to my obsession with Pinterest, I have discovered crazy techniques to make your nails over-the-top ridiculous, like water marbling (as you can see modeled on my hands above).

Currently, my favorite color has become Mink Muffs by Essie (shout out to Miss Mink!). It’s the perfect combination of darkness for the winter with a hint of taupy lightness.

Beautifying My Hands : wedding beauty long island Essie2 via Simply Said

All of this unexpected nail obsessioness has created a positive outcome—longer, thicker, beautiful nails! You see, every time I do my nails (which is becoming a biweekly event) I use Rejuvacote nail growth system as my bottom and top coat. I know many hive members are true to Nailtiques, but Mama Elk used Nailtiques for a decade and now swears by this.Beautifying My Hands : wedding beauty long island 21iajsi

Now that I have beautiful nails, I can’t help but think, what the frick will I do with them for the wedding? I know most brides pick a pale pink color that is almost natural, and I’m definitely leaning towards the natural route. But every time I think I’ve decided, I get blindsided with a gorgeous picture of a bride with bright nails! I mean blue? how awesome are those?

And have a look at these stunners. Ummm can you say GORGEOUS? Honestly, I adore this!

So now, I am utterly confused! I don’t really think a dark color would suit my more pastelly color scheme, but I can’t help but be intrigued by a bright splash of color. As a reminder, this is my bouquet inspiration:

And here are just two of the colors I’ve been considering…

What do you think? Brighter is better or almost nude for the win? What shad will you be painting your nails on your wedding day? Oh, and do you have any color suggestions?

Flower Workshop with Ariella Chezar

by admin on January 5, 2012, under Wedding Flowers

Ariella Chezar is far and away one of my all-time favorite creative people ever of all time. Ever. Her work is one of the reasons I fell in love with weddings, and every time I see a photo of her flowers, it’s like a little gift. And if you feel that way, too, then you’re really going to love this: Ariella is hosting a floral design workshop in Maui!

The three-day class will focus on color, choosing the right flowers, and of course creating jaw-dropping arrangements and bridal bouquets; plus a field trip to a flower grower, and a party to wrap it all up. Be sure to check out all of the details right here.

Remember Serena and Matthew’s wedding at Haiku Mill…?

The workshop will take place at Maui’s Haiku Mill, February 22 – 24. If you love Ariella‘s work as much as I do, and you want to learn how to create floral designs that look like they grew that way, then don’t miss this chance to learn from the ultimate flower goddess herself. And if you don’t know about Ariella’s work (impossible!), then head over to her website immediately and immerse yourself in all the gorgeousness.

Board #544: Me Ke Aloha

by admin on January 5, 2012, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Mood: romantic, breezy
Palette: white hibiscus, sand, palm leaf, beach house blue

Our first inspiration board of 2012! And since it’s the midst of winter, I thought some of you might be craving a little destination inspiration. So we’re off to Hawaii! And as much as I love bright colors, I wanted to give you something light and breezy here. Neutrals like white and tan, greenery, and a bit of sun-bleached blue. I’ve drawn inspiration from things like palm trees, pineapples, and white hibiscus flowers, and added a few vintage touches like a retro fan, toy airplane, surfer postcard, and a darling Hawaiian quilt cake (I love Hawaiian quilts!).

Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend

by admin on December 23, 2011, under Wedding Dresses

When I shop for everyday clothing, I rarely try things on. Exception: jeans and bras. But things like shirts, and dresses—I can just look at them and know whether or not they will work on my frame and whether the size is correct. I’m not sure how I’ve developed this talent (perhaps the years of shopping and mounds of clothes I’ve accumulated alongside my shopaholic mom?), but…it works for me. If I were to give a completely unscientific estimate of how often a piece I don’t try on doesn’t fit/work…I’d say less than 5%. I have a pretty good eye! As it is with most clothes, I had a pretty good idea of what style of wedding dress would look good on me and what wouldn’t. Despite being a plus-size bride, I’m very proportional for my size and have a smaller waist. I’m lucky because I’m 5′10″ and my height balances my size. I do have larger hips, so I know I want to “cover those up” (i.e., I won’t be going for any mermaid gowns!).

Other than that, I had an overwhelming feeling that A-line or modified A-line gowns would look the best on me. Here’s the other kicker: I want lace. I’ve known I wanted a lace wedding dress since I was a little girl, and with a lace-themed wedding…I mean, I wanted a lace dress. No, make that needed a lace dress. (If we add some tulle in, I may love it even more…)

Now ladies, I’ve heard horror story after horror story about plus-size wedding-dress shopping. So I called up two of the more “upscale” bridal salons in Calgary, hoping they would have more diverse sample sizes. I made appointments during a weekend my mom came up specifically to dress shop. I didn’t want to go with Fiancee Eagle (she went without me and I haven’t seen her dress!), and I didn’t want to go with my bridal party just yet. Why? Because I was scared of looking like a fool if none of the dresses fit me.

The first bridal salon we went to, The Bridal Centre, had me try on about six dresses in my street size. They didn’t fit (big surprise, since bridal sizing is notoriously small). At this particular salon, they are all about service and “the experience,” which I liked. But they remove the designer tags and replace them with their store tags. They also do not allow photos until you’ve purchased a dress. Annoying. While their selection of plus-size dresses was good, their selection of plus-size A-line lace gowns was…zero. I also felt like even though my budget was in their “top tier” of price points, they continued to put me in dated, matronly gowns. Do couture plus-size dresses just not exist?!

However, I did try on one dress at the Bridal Centre that I am considering: Maggie Sottero Embrace. I love the ivory over light gold color combination. (How do I know what dress it is? Because I am sneaky like that and know the Maggie dresses pretty well. Their tag-removing ways couldn’t have fooled me!)

Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture052 Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture053

The only thing was: the sample was a good eight sizes too small, and the satin underlay for the dress wouldn’t get over my birthin’ hips. (Yup, that’s right—I admitted it. I have birthin’ hips.) The lace overlay was fine and the top gave us the general idea…but I still couldn’t see what it would really look like if it were in my size. And at $2,000 with the dress needing serious alterations to the bust (because the dress would be in a size to accommodate the hips)…I just wasn’t sold. I didn’t say yes to the dress.

The next bridal salon we went to, Ethos Bridal, also had a very good selection of plus-size gowns. But their selection of plus-size A-line lace gowns? Zip. Nada. I had a very sweet consultant who was very very sensitive to the plus-size situation and didn’t let me even look at dresses I couldn’t try on. It was nice of her, but the reason I booked an appointment at Ethos was because they carry Pronovias dresses. They have hundreds of beautiful lace and tulle A-line dresses. These are the type of dresses I’ve dreamed about since I was little!

Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture054 Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture055

And they had them at Ethos! But in a bridal six. Needless to say, the consultant knew what she was doing and actually got me in a satin dress I liked: Mori Lee Julietta 3093. It isn’t a dress that looks ANYTHING like my beloved Pronovias dresses, but the shape looked really good on me. Unfortunately, again, no photos.

Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture056 Dress Shopping: A Wasted Weekend : wedding calgary wedding dress Picture057

Julietta by Mori Lee dress 3093 / Images via Mori Lee

Needless to say, while I really liked the bling on the top of the dress, all I could think was, “This would look really good on me, in lace.” I didn’t say yes to the dress (again).

All in all, I liked going to the bridal salons and trying on all the different styles and getting to try on veils…but I didn’t find my dress. I didn’t even get to try on the dress style that I wanted. However, it was confirmed that A-line silhouettes and sweetheart necklines do flatter me (my clothing intuition was correct…shocker!) and that I’m not into pick-ups on skirts. And seeing myself in satin dresses just further confirmed that I want/need lace. So, I feel like I’m back where I started. I began dress shopping wanting an A-line lace dress, and finished shopping also wanting an A-line lace dress (possibly even more than before).

We’ve got less than eight months to go until the wedding, and I need to get on it! I need a dress. Dresses take six months to order and two months to alter. As both The Bridal Centre and Ethos Bridal told me: I needed to have ordered my dress like yesterday. But I still can’t seem to commit to ordering a $2,000 dress (+$600–700 in alterations…) without being able to really try it on. That’s a lot of money that I don’t necessarily want my mom to spend.

Are you a plus-size bride, too? Did you find dress shopping difficult, or did you luck out and find your perfect dress? Has anyone seen plus-size Pronovias dresses in store?

Talking About Flowers

by admin on December 23, 2011, under Wedding Flowers

I know that flowers tend to just die after the wedding (which totally stinks) and that a lot of people consider them a waste of money…but flowers are one of my favorite things about weddings, and they are something I’m willing to put a little bit of money into. I mean, when else are you going to have an excuse to carry around a gorgeous bouquet all day!?

The florist I’m meeting with was highly recommended to me by a friend, and I can’t wait to see what kind of work he’ll be able to do for me on our very limited budget. Luckily, my favorite centerpieces include lots of greenery and filler, so that should help us stay within budget and still have gorgeous flowers!

Because the venue has very dark stained wood paneling and nice, neutral beige walls, we have decided to stick with a very natural color palate for the flowers and the wedding.

Here is some of the inspiration I showed the florist…

I love the shape of this arrangement.

I’m hoping our centerpieces will have the fullness and texture of this centerpiece…minus the pink! I promised Mr. Opossum we would not have a super girly wedding.

I really love the colors in this arrangement. The only thing I would add is a little bit of a contrasting color.

This arrangement is a little bit of a curve ball, but I truly love all the greenery! What can I say, green is a favorite color of mine! The only thing I would change is the color of the large flower in the middle.

And last, a centerpiece I have loved from the first time I saw it! I think I’ve literally had this saved on my desktop for two years. Once again, I love the greenery, I love the colors of the flowers, and I think the fruit is just interesting and different. And I don’t even mind the container in this image. I think it adds a really nice contrast. (I’m all about contrast.)

For the bouquet I want the same elements. Right now, these are my favorites.
