An Abrupt End to Miss Mink’s Dress Search

by admin on December 13, 2011, under Wedding Dresses

The other day, I told you about my trip to Hitched in Georgetown and how I added Jorge Manuel to the list of designers I liked after seeing his name on the salon’s website. I started gobbling up everything I could find online about Jorge because his dresses were unlike any I had seen before. While many of the silhouettes were traditional, the details were so different! I thought his dresses looked like pieces of art.

I had been searching for dresses with quirky or whimsical details and while many of the dresses I tried on were beautiful, none seemed to have a very special or original look. The Jorge Manuel gowns had me excited. The fashion lover in me liked them a lot and I also felt excited about them. Perhaps I was feeling the emotions that many brides feel when they find their dress?

I tried on The Emerald gown at Hitched and it was a wee bit too slinky for me since I’m a little self-conscious about my hips. I kept searching and reading whatever I could about Jorge and his dresses.

A post on the Completely Unveiled wedding blog got me really excited. Jorge was giving away one of his gorgeous, one-of-a-kind dresses! I couldn’t imagine being lucky enough to win the Star gown, but I started to daydream about it a little bit. Finally, I decided that I would regret not trying to win and wrote a little essay to submit as my entry. I heard that there were over 250 entries, so I wasn’t too hopeful.

A few weeks later, I woke up to find out that I was one of the five semi-finalists in the Upon a Star Contest! Just getting picked for one of those five spots was a thrill. I put the contest out of my head for a couple weeks.

On the morning that the winner of the gown was announced, I groggily checked my email and didn’t have any messages about the contest. Oh well. It was nice to have been a finalist and I realized that the contest made me decide that I wanted to be a Jorge bride since I hadn’t been as excited about any other designer’s gowns during my search.

I figured I’d check out which of finalists was the winner. One of the pictures on the front page of Jorge’s website had changed. I was one click away from finding out who won one of his beautiful wedding gowns.

I clicked and screamed.

Junior Mink seemed to think I was injured. I ran over to Mr. Mink and threw myself into his arms, probably making unintelligible sounds. He thought I saw a spider. He knew I had entered a contest to win a dress, but I wouldn’t let him see it or tell him too many details. He couldn’t possibly be as excited as I was.

So, my dress search came to a very unexpected and abrupt end with a one-of-a-kind, dream dress. Later that morning, Jorge Manuel himself called me at the office and said that he was flying me down to Charleston to pick up my gown at Maddison Row, the bridal salon that helped sponsor the contest. He promised me that the dress was better in person. I had only looked at a few pictures of the gown on a dress form, but I thought he was selling it a little short. It looked beautiful to me! I hope you’ll agree! Tomorrow, I’ll share pictures from my trip to Charleston, including ones of me trying on my gown for the first time!

Have you ever won anything from a blog contest? What was it?

DIY Giraffe Invitations

by admin on December 13, 2011, under Wedding Stationery

Hive, have you seen the new Randomizer series? I have, and it’s awesome! It seriously put me into “wanting to do recaps” mode just so I could participate. I feel like before I can start recapping, I should share one of my favorite things with you: our invitations!

Our invitation suite was a DIY affair…and it ended up taking longer than I thought (which is how it always happens, right?!). I’ll break the whole process down for you, but it’ll probably be easy to do in pictures. :D

The first step was to create the invitation suite. As much as I loved all those modern invitations I kept talking about so many months ago, I really wanted something that looked fresh, but ultimately traditional. I spend all day, every day designing hip, modern things…for our wedding, I decided to follow my little designer-heart and create something that I loved, even if it wasn’t exactly “cool” and seemed traditional. That was my inspiration…

That and I really wanted an invitation suite with multiple pieces. I don’t know why, but I wanted our invitation to have a whole bunch of pieces for people to read and look at. This is also why I didn’t want pocket fold; I wanted just pieces everywhere. Weird, I know. I made the pieces a few different sizes so they’d “stack up” nicely.

And lastly, I wanted something that could dictate the look of other printed materials for our big day (table numbers, programs, escort cards, etc). Having one look I could essentially “re-use” over and over made things easy, and look cohesive. But more on that later!

I designed the whole set in Adobe Illustrator, using the fonts Burgues Script and Mrs. Eaves (for the small caps).

We didn’t have a theme, but since I used hearts on our save the dates, I carried hearts over into the invitations.

Our Map (4×6″) and Accommodations card (4×6″).

Next, I cut out belly bands while Mr. G embossed the flap of our envelopes with my Cuttlebug.

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery Dscn02101 I believe Mr. G said at this point, “Now, you can’t say that I haven’t done anything for this wedding ever again.” Haha.

Well…after I got all our invitations printed (through gotprint.net), Mr. G took off for his Bachelor week of skiing/camping with our Best Man. Luckily, the Giraffe Parents picked up the slack!

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 4 4

The photo above shows how I used our not-theme of “hearts.” You can click the photo to make it larger and see more clearly, but there were hearts everywhere! The address labels were heart shaped, as were the return address labels, and every belly band had a heart tag  around it that listed our guests’ names.

The labels on the front of our envelopes were printed on my parents’ HP printer, and the cut out with my Cricut (the same goes for the labels on the back). Our labels on our RSVP envelopes were smaller versions of the ones you see here (but with our address, of course!).

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 5 5

The back with our return address labels and Cuttlebug embossing. Gotta love those metallic envelopes!

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 6 6

I made the envelope liners using the heart-gyle, I had designed for our website. I bought a ream of 11×17″ blue paper from OfficeMax, and was able to print 3 liners per page…of course, I also bought a ream of blue paper from Staples so I could compare the “blueness” of each. Needless to say, 6 months after the wedding, I still have a ton of blue paper.

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 7 7

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 8 8

I stacked all the pieces of the invitation from big to small (with a small wallet sized e-photo of us on the top), wrapped a belly band around it, wrapped baker’s twine around that, and attached a heart tag with the twine.

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 9 9

Okay, okay, Daddy G did the stacking and tying, but I put them in the envelopes!

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery Dsc016106

There were so many! The DIYing went on forever!

DIY Giraffe Invitations : wedding chicago diy invitations stationery 11 11

So there they are! They whole kit and caboodle (…until recently, I thought it was ’kitten caboodle’). I’m pretty happy with the final product and I head a lot of nice things from our guests, and that’s what counts. :)

If I did it all over again, I probably still design my own invitations, but I don’t know if I’d go through all the work of doing the extra pieces! I spent a looooooong time trying to set up my Cricut to cut the hearts correctly and I got super frustrated at times. I loved how it looked, but I don’t think I needed all that stress at the time.

Did you take on the daunting tasking on DIYing invites? Would you do it again?

Miss Mink Goes Dress Shopping with Friends

by admin on December 11, 2011, under Wedding Dresses

I’ve been sharing quite a bit about shopping for my bridesmaids recently, and it’s probably time for me to revisit my wedding-gown search, which had started online. My first dress-shopping excursion wasn’t really my idea. A fashion-blogger friend of mine was writing an article for a regional magazine’s annual wedding issue, and she wanted to have a few pictures of a bride shopping at a local boutique to go with it. So, I made an appointment at the small bridal shop in town and invited a couple other friends along.

This was just going to be a fun shopping trip with some friends. I knew we weren’t going to find my dress at the shop. A lot of what they had was embellished and sequined with layers and flounces.

Now, I love bridal fashion. During Bridal Market, which is the wedding industry’s version of Fashion Week, I hang on the blogs of the people I know are attending. I have a hard time pulling myself away from Twitter, where I can see pictures from the shows. I can look at almost any dress and find something positive about it. So, I can objectively say that the dresses I tried on were lovely. They just weren’t the kinds of dresses that I want to wear myself.

I have three regrets about how I started my dress search:

1. My first stop should have been to a full-service salon. This salon had a hands-off approach. My consultant pointed out the racks and told me what designers were in which section and told us to pull six dresses to start.

2. I should have shopped with a smaller group. I tried on dresses the others picked first and was exhausted by the time I got to ones I liked. What’s more, even if I put a dress on and knew it wasn’t going to work, I had to parade out of the dressing room to show it to everyone. I probably could have tried on more dresses if I had been alone. In the end, this little trip was about getting images for my friend to use with her article, so this wasn’t a big deal.

3. I should have been open to all silhouettes from the start. I went into the shop intent on finding a lace A-line dress with straps. Such a narrow scope meant I probably passed over some dresses when I first got there. As you can imagine, most of the dresses were strapless, there were a variety of silhouettes, and lace was not dominant in their inventory. In fact, I don’t think I tried on any lace at all! The others convinced me to try on some other styles.

Just for fun, I tried on the full-length version of Justin Alexander 8465, the dress that I called “the blog dress” because I saw it on several wedding blogs early on in my planning. I’m not crazy about the angle of the photo of me in the dress, but that dress does wonderful things to your waist! It’s a beautiful dress. It wasn’t for me, but I can understand why it’s so popular!

Even though I tried on about 10 dresses that didn’t interest me, I learned a lot at that appointment. I learned that fabric and workmanship can vary a lot, even among dresses in the same price range. One of the gowns I tried on looked pretty in the mirror, but the dress didn’t feel good on me. After a few minutes of wearing it, I realized that the fabric was the problem. One of my friends quietly pointed out that the stitching and hem work was not done well, either.

I realized that strapless gowns feel almost nothing like the strapless dresses I’ve worn in the past. If fitted properly, they feel great and there’s no need to tug on the top to keep the dress in place. I also added modified A-line and trumpet dresses to the list of silhouettes I like.

In the end, we had a fun time and my friend got pictures for her article, so it was a successful day.

Anyone else have a first appointment that was just a prelude to the real search? Did you start your search with a very specific kind of dress in mind like I did? Did you expend your scope as well?

How Can a Bride Take Advantage of Free Business Cards?

by admin on December 8, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Mr. Unicycle had a good laugh when he saw “Moo Cards” on our wedding to-do list, but Vistaprint got the last laugh because I ended up just ordering 250 business cards through them FO’ FREE. Let me back up. I’d seen several other bees use mini Moo cards featuring engagement pics that direct guests to a public Flickr account where they can share pictures they take at their wedding. I love this idea because I know I’ll be waiting on pins and needles for our pro pics to come back, so having guest photos all in one place = winning.

How Can a Bride Take Advantage of Free Business Cards? : wedding chicago favors stationery Winning winning

Image via T-Shirt Guru

My first step was to create a Flickr account. I ended up first creating a Yahoo account, since Flickr is through Yahoo. I didn’t want to go through my existing Yahoo account because then I’d have to give guests my real password. And it’s kind of an embarrassing password. It involves a certain man with Jheri curls. We debated whether to upgrade to a pro account or not and eventually decided…(drum roll please)…to wait until we get closer to the wedding to actually make a decision. Then I dabbled in Picnik for the first time ever and came up with an overly cutesy design:

Then, since Vistaprint was running a “limited time,” which is to say “all the time” sale of 250 free business cards, I pounced on it. Slowly. Since I knew it would be around…forever. Seriously, Vistaprint is always giving away everything FO’ friggin FREE. I don’t know how they stay in business. I did have to pay a small upload fee to use my own lovely design, and of course shipping, but the business cards themselves were free. I was so anxious to see them when they arrived that I mutilated the cute little box.

But then I remembered my camera.

They look perf! Well, the yellow isn’t as vibrant as I’d hoped, but other than that, perf. I’m planning on tucking them into the invitation suite (once I finish start it). And since I have more than I need, perhaps I’ll tuck some into the thank you notes as well!

Do you think our guests will use our Flickr account after the wedding? What’s a good way to encourage people to use it?

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account

by admin on December 7, 2011, under Wedding Gift Ideas

Telling you about Etsy is not at all “breaking news,” but I thought I would share my new favorite website/shopping obsession. For those who are not familiar…oh, who am I kidding, you all know what Etsy is.

As someone who would love to be truly crafty, but really only has great organizational skills and perfect penmanship, Etsy is a creative haven. I look at all the beautiful, unique goods and wish that I could duplicate their efforts. In some cases, I’ve tried and failed (the next time I make an attempt, I’ll make sure to blog about it…it’s a hot mess), but mainly I just wish that my mother’s sewing abilities had been passed on to me or that I was a wiz with a hot glue gun. On weekends, I’ve sometimes found myself perusing the site for hours—not necessarily for anything in particular, but just to see what’s out there. This has sometimes resulted in some great purchases, other times in putting me behind in work!

Since my discovery of Etsy, I’ve found a lot of great gifts—especially for newly engaged friends!! I like these gifts more than others because they’re unique (limiting the chance that someone would buy the same gift) and they’re supporting individuals, not corporations. Here is a sample of some of my favorite purchases, with links to each seller’s shop, so you can browse their great products:

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account : wedding decor philadelphia Il 430x027 il_430x027

Personalized bowl from Paloma’s Nest

This was an engagement gift over a year ago, personalized with the bride and groom’s names and wedding date. I feel like these are everywhere now, though! I’ve seen them used for ring storage/display at home or even for the ring bearer to carry on the wedding day.

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account : wedding decor philadelphia Il 430x028 il_430x028

Bespoke map heart from Bombus

This engagement gift was extra special. I asked for it personalized with a map of Germany to recognize where the groom is from and the place the couple was engaged. Bombus’s site is absolutely awesome, and I really want to get one of her bowls, since you can personalize the location and Mr. Turkey absolutely loves maps.

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account : wedding decor philadelphia Il 430x029 il_430x029

Personalized city skyline notecards by Architette

I am an Architette frequent buyer at this point—you saw my personalized cards. These are great options for a bride-to-be or even a newly married couple (would make super-cute thank you notes).

Great for Gifts, Bad for the Bank Account : wedding decor philadelphia Il 430x030 il_430x030

Philly moleskine journal from Art Shark Designs

I got this for myself to put in my purse for when I have “great” ideas. How cute is the Gocco print?

What do you all think? This is just a small selection, too (like I said, new favorite). With all the upcoming weddings this year and new babies on the way or just arrived, there’s an endless supply of fun products to browse (and maybe even buy). I just found out about a new engagement this week, so I’m currently on a mission to find a perfect gift for the happy couple!! Maybe in the future I’ll blog again about my Etsy finds.

Do you love spending oodles of money and time on Etsy? Any favorite sellers I should be aware of?

Stacked

by admin on December 3, 2011, under Wedding Rings

I have been obsessed with the stacked ring look for a while now and I decided to try it out for myself.

This is the first combination I tried. I can’t help but think I’m doing something wrong because it kinda looks like my finger is suffocating…

Stacked : wedding rings riverside Downloa03

Then I tried putting a ring on both sides of my e-ring. Not terrible, but I didn’t like how the top ring didn’t sit flush. I’m very picky, I know.

Stacked : wedding rings riverside Downloa04 Here is a combo with the pink band omitted. I really like that pretty little pink band, even though it’s really thin, I think it adds character. :D

Stacked : wedding rings riverside Downloa05

This last option was my favorite combination so far. By the way, you are probably thinking that I’m a total baller with all these diamond wedding rings, right? Not so much. They are CZ and I ordered them from InspiredSilver.com so I could play around with options before committing to a real ring.

Stacked : wedding rings riverside Downloa06

So what do y’all think? Did you go with a stacked look? How many rings did you stack?

Friends, I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather (which is why I forgot to publish this post to go up earlier today!), so I don’t have much to say about today’s inspiration board, except that I’m very much in the mood for festive winter inspiration, and I’m loving combinations of gray with warm colors like red and orange and pink, so I hope you love them too!

Board #541: Coral and Storm

by admin on November 21, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

I’ve been thinking lots about unexpected color schemes for fall, and when I came across this painting, I fell in love with the idea of gray and coral, especially with some bay leaf garland accents. It would work wonderfully in almost any season, but I think with the orange blush of the coral, it is a sophisticated take on an autumn palette. Also, as a neutral, I don’t think that gray is going anywhere (calling it trendy would be a bit like calling basic black a fad). It’s wonderfully subtle and can range from sleek modern to softly romantic like it is here to dark and moody, and I really just love it in all its forms.

Mood: sweet, romantic
Palette: storm gray, faded coral

Top row from left: Sappho on the Leucadian Cliff by Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, photo of bouquet with dusty miller by Elizabeth Messina, escort cards on peach ribbons and Versailles backdrop both from Martha Stewart Weddings
Row 2: peach and gold cake and gray calligraphy by from Martha Stewart Weddings, cameo via My Heart’s Song
