From the Bride…I was five years old when my mom took me to see the movie Father of the Bride.  She knew she was in trouble when I said, “that movie gave me lots of good ideas for my wedding, Mommy!” From that day forward, I began planning my wedding. The plans evolved quite a bit from what I had envisioned as a five year old, but my love for weddings always remained. When I finally met the perfect guy, I was more than excited to finally make my wedding dreams come to life.

We were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple and it couldn’t have been more perfect, even more so because Josh’s parents were married there as well. After the wedding, we headed to the reception, which was held in my parents backyard in Hacienda Heights. We are both relaxed, easy going people and we wanted to keep our reception exactly that while incorporating our love for Italian food, vintage furniture and DIY decor. Since my love of weddings runs deep I wanted to design and carry out the plans of everything I possibly could for the big day.

When it came to my attire for the wedding, I wanted fulfill the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue philosophy, I wore my great grandmother’s necklace, my new custom made wedding dress, a pair of earrings borrowed from my aunt and then I had my toes painted blue.  The wedding was exactly as I had always imagined, even without the swans I originally wanted when I was five.

Board #533: Strawberries and Gingham

by admin on June 29, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

In an alternate universe, my wedding would have been a picnic…

Red gingham is the quintessential summer pattern, reminiscent of picnics and backyard barbecues. Mixing it with other prints, such as the fun floral of the Ila clutch, adds some depth and playful sophistication. Gingham, florals, strawberries – by using them sparingly against a mostly white backdrop, they can work together without looking cheesy or theme-y. (For example, skip the gingham tablecloths, and instead choose a lovely white linen, or perhaps your guests will lounge on picnic blankets in the grass.) I imagine that this wedding would be simple and budget friendly, with details like baskets of strawberry shortcake favors that double as centerpieces and family-made layer cakes. A delicious box lunch is a totally budget-friendly way to feed guests, and is logistically much more manageable than most other options, and limiting alcoholic beverages to bottles of beer is perfectly appropriate for a picnic lunch. And yes, I know we’ve all seen mason jars a gazillion times, but they’re still sweet, especially when the rest of the wedding doesn’t look like an Anthropologie catalog exploded all over everything.

Board #532: Garden Pink and Green

by admin on June 27, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Sometimes the simplest inspiration boards take me the longest time to make. I spend more time choosing perfect individual elements, since the palette or theme might be pretty traditional. For today’s garden wedding inspiration board, in the ever-popular palette of pink and green, I’ve used Sally Holmes roses (my mother’s favorite), and bows (on the veil, the invites, the bridesmaid dress, the groom’s tie, the favor cones). Lemonade and garden chairs are perfect for a backyard setting…

Mood: sweet and classic
Palette: garden green, pale rosy pink

Cake Love

by admin on June 26, 2011, under Wedding Fayre

(If you’re in the DC area and you haven’t been to the bakery that this post is named after, go immediately! I recommend Niel’s Hat Trick, but you really can’t go wrong. My mouth is watering just thinking about it… YUM!)

Back in April when I mentioned that we were going to have to find a new bakery since my baker friend had a bun in the oven? No? Well, now you know. I immediately went about emailing a bunch of bakeries in the area to get a feel for pricing, flavors and if they even had the availability to take on another wedding for early September. After some shocking prices, sadness that my favorite bakery no longer does wedding cakes and a surprising number of bakeries just never getting back to me, we set up tastings with three: Amy Beck Cake Designs, Luscious Layers Bakery and one other that I’m not naming because it wasn’t awesome, let’s just call it #3.

In true Miss Bacon fashion, the appointments are all within a week of each other so that we can make easy comparisons without too many notes. The first tasting was at Amy Beck and it was ahhhhhhhhmazing. She didn’t ask us what flavors we liked or what we wanted to try, so when we got there, we were greeted by a table filled with all the favors of cake and frosting that she offered. Talk about a great first impression!

The first thing we did was talk through the look and feel of our wedding; I shared our inspiration board, pictures of our invitations, the flowers, my dress, the girls’ dresses, the guys’ tuxes and our little cake topper. This blogging thing has made me VERY well prepared for these kinds of meetings. Then we talked through our preferences with cakes – did we like round or square cakes; tall and skinny tiers or short and stout tiers; did we want them traditionally stacked or wonky and playfully stacked? Lastly, we talked through our vision of what the design would be and she left us to the multitude of flavors to taste away while she worked up a sketch.

Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom SUGAR HIGH!!

Menu of flavors, and we tried every one!

One word: OMGtheflavorsaresoamazinghowdidwelivethislongwithouteverexperiencingthesecakes?!?! We mixed and matched just about every flavor from pistachio cake with hazelnut buttercream to devil’s food with raspberry buttercream and chocolate truffle ganache. Everything was amazing, even the plain ol’ chocolate and vanilla cakes with coordinating buttercreams. This lady knows what she’s doing. After being sufficiently sugared, she came back over with a great sketch that was pretty much everything we asked for and promised that we’d be getting a full quote in the next couple day and after that, we would start talking grooms cake. We left giddy with sugar and so pleased that our first official tasting went so well.

Our last two tastings were scheduled for the next weekend, and FMIL and FSFIL (Future Stepfather in Law) Bacon were going to be in town, so I did my due diligence and confirmed with the bakeries that we were cool to bring them along. Both bakeries were ok with it and we were off to the tastings!

The first stop was Luscious Layers Bakery and we sat down at a beautiful table with the owner to look through pictures and talk through our wedding and our cake design preferences. Once we had gotten through the nitty gritty details, Ashley set off to work on a sketch and some rough pricing and out came the CAKE! Unlike Amy Beck, Luscious Layers asks for you to go to their website and pick out the 4-5 flavor combinations that are most enticing to you and bake mini cakes for you to try. So we were each presented a plate with 5 slices of cake that we had and picked ourselves: Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Frosting, Coconut Cake with Coconut Cream, Champagne Cake with Strawberries and Whipped cream, Pistachio with Cannoli Cream and Butter Cake with Praline Cream.

We each got one of these! Bad Miss Bacon, I took bites before I took pictures…
Cake Love : wedding cake chicago Dsc0369 DSC0369
So yummy that I wanted some of his. He clearly didn’t notice and that’s why he’s a keeper!

The cakes were all really good, but I couldn’t get the Almond cake from Amy Beck out of my mind, so I asked if they had any on hand that we could taste to get a feel for it. She went right to the bakery case and crabbed a cupcake for us all to try. Um, it was pine! We talked a bit more about some of the other things we want to have at the wedding like the sweet table, and skirted around the grooms cake since the groom was beside me, then happily went on our way.

After a quick pit stop at 7-11 for some salty chips to break up alllllll the sugar we were having, we were on to #3. We ended up being about 15 minutes early to the appointment, but they happily took us in and sat us at the table… then scrounged for two more chairs since there were four of us (like I emailed them about before). One of the ladies on staff came over and chatted with us briefly about what we were looking for, since we’d had this conversation a couple of times, we knew exactly what we wanted, then she took my inspiration board and photos and brought us cake! This bakery hadn’t asked us for flavors so we expected something like what Amy Beck did for us – lots of flavors to taste and maybe mix and match. Oh no. This bakery brought us one plate of thinly sliced cakes in whatever flavors they had on hand: Lemon with Lemon frosting , Vanilla with Orange frosting , Chocolate with Vanilla frosting, Red velvet with Cream Cheese frosting , Chocolate with Raspberry frosting and Lemon with Vanilla frosting and Raspberry jam. This would be a good time to note that I don’t like lemon baked goods of any variety and I’m not a big fan of orange baked goods either.

Cake Love : wedding cake chicago Dsc036901 DSC036901
You want all four of us to share this? Really?

We each took a tiny bit of the different flavors and stared at each other as the woman came back over and asked the Baconator to take a walk so that we could discuss his groom’s cake before she could give us a quote. Really, lady, you just asked the groom to leave?? He obliged and she proceeded to chastise me for not bringing pictures of what I wanted his cake to look like. I just started sputtering random scenes from Star Wars to get her on her way. She then asked for our budget for both cakes, I told her and she guffawed at me. “Well, with that budget we might be able to give you a discount since you’re getting two cakes. We’ll still have to max it out and that won’t include tax or delivery. Oh, and this quote is only good for 3 days. Have you picked flavors that you’d like?” Thankfully, the Baconator quickly returned and we could get the heck out of that shop. We’d had enough of them and their lemon cakes (not to mention the woman yacking away on the phone and the other lady berating her employee right in front of us).

Did you have wildly different experiences with some vendors? How did you handle it?

Dressing the Ladies—Part 1: Sisters!

by admin on June 23, 2011, under Wedding Wear

When I set up my bridesmaids’-dress meeting, I figured we’d all go together and get dresses knocked out. But the weekend I had set aside for it didn’t work for my sisters, so Bombshell, Pistol, my mom, and I all ended up going the week before I planned on going with everyone else. Bombshell requested we check out a dress shop near my parents’ house, so I drove out there to check it out.

The shop was small but not crowded. All the bridesmaids’ dresses were in the back of the store. Bombshell started digging through dresses and trying on various styles. “What’s that?” you say. “Trying on all kinds of styles?” Yes, my friend—although I haven’t discussed it yet, I decided to let each girl pick whatever dress she wanted as long as it was short and the correct color. Each girl has their own color to fit in with the rainbow theme. Bombshell is green, Pistol is orange, Rifle is yellow, Shotgun is purple, and Machine Gun is blue. So, I was mostly there to approve the color and tell everyone they looked fabulous.

Anyway, Bombshell dug through dresses and Pistol, Ma, and I talked. Pistol didn’t do a lot of looking at this store because they didn’t have much to try on in her size. We had already planned to go a couple other places, so we weren’t too worried about it. Bombshell tried on all kinds of things. Some looked good, some not so much. Just for kicks, my mom picked out a dress the shade of green that I liked for her to try on so we could see how the color looked on her. Honestly, none of us was all that impressed with it on the hanger. But when she came out of the dressing room in it, we were all blown away. It looked great! My mom made Pistol go out to the car to get heels for her to try with it. Even better!

And, since the dress she tried on was in her size and the right color and fit perfectly, she bought it and took it home right then and there. She wants to sew in some spaghetti straps, but I already mentioned she’s an awesome seamstress, so we’re not worried about that. So, one down, four to go (five including Cherry Bomb).

This picture does not do it justice. It looks killer in person (and hopefully will when a pro photographer captures it).

With such success, we were hoping Pistol would be just as easy. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. We went to David’s Bridal and had a sort of irritating attendant, so she didn’t try much on. What she tried on looked good, but not amazing.

Meh

We also went to a locally owned bridal shop, but all their samples were way too big and we were not digging anything. We finally went to the mall to see if anything jumped out, but orange is a tough color to find at the mall. (Well, we did find this dress that I got Pistol to try on for a laugh. We got quite a few laughs when she accidentally got locked out of her dressing room and had to wear it for fifteen minutes while we found someone to unlock it!)

So we ended the day with no dress for Pistol, since we were all pretty sick of looking by that point. We still had plenty of time and figured we’d give it another shot another day.

Did you have a tough time dressing any of your girls?

Board #531: Castaway

by admin on June 23, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

More beach wedding ideas for the first official week of summer! I didn’t want to go all out with a shipwrecked theme (no Pirates of the Caribbean today), so I combined that whimsical element (in the form of messages in a bottle, old nautical charts, sunken treasure-inspired jewelry) with a laid back bohemian island vibe (rum-filled coconuts, breezy beach tablescapes, a gauzy kaftan dress). To be completely honest, I wouldn’t mind spending some vacation time inside this inspiration board…

Lady Gaga Inspiration Board

Lady Gaga in a Hello Kitty photoshoot

One part retro lover, a quarter pop culture enthusiast and two parts dare devil – Lady Gaga brings the avant garde in full force.  Be it anime meets deity or saturated in androgyny, cutting edge brides will want only the craziest.  Turn your wedding into an event worthy of a photo shoot with eye-popping accessories, venues decked out top to bottom in one single color or something as simple as a bouquet made of roses dipped in 24-karat gold.  Sometimes you just have to ask yourself, what would Gaga do?

Board #530: Chambray and White

by admin on June 21, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Today marks the first official day of summer, and it is officially HOT. An easygoing oceanside inspiration board seemed like just the thing. This faded blue and white palette has a preppy vibe to it, and though I love its simplicity, a pop of orange or pink could punch it up for those with a preference for more color. Summery details include blueberries, seersucker, espadrilles and hydrangea. Oars, sailboats and cracked crab play up the coastal setting.

Mood: coastal casual
Palette: blue chambray, weathered gray, stone white

Going Paper

by admin on June 19, 2011, under Wedding Flowers

There are tons of paper-flower tutorials out there. I Googled around a bit and also used an Offbeat Bride thread on paper flowers to find a few I liked. My process for picking which flowers to make was pretty much:

  1. Look at paper flowers. Decide if I like how they look when complete, knowing that they will probably not look as good when I do it.
  2. Look at the tutorial. Does this seem like something I can reasonably expect I will be able to do?
  3. Will it require buying a bunch of stuff I don’t already own and will never use again? How expensive is said stuff?
  4. Try making one and see how it turns out.

So far I have made quite a few of these two types of flowers. I might make another type or two as well, depending on how much time I have. I used the tutorials I linked to, but I do have some advice beyond what the tutorials say based on my own experience.

For these guys I didn’t do the distressing or glitter stuff because it’s not my style. I bought this punch from Amazon. I hot-glued pipe cleaners to the bottom so they can be arranged into a bouquet at some point. And I just used a Q-tip with the end cut off to curl the edges.

Going Paper : wedding decor diy flowers toledo Cannon1 cannon1

My yellow roses in progress

For the other flowers, I cut out petals for each flower (using one full page for each flower) and asked Mr. Cannon to help with the crumpling step. It gave me one less thing I had to do, and he was more than happy to crumple so he could get involved without having to get too creative. I also left a little space in the middle of each of the flowers to feed the pipe cleaner through to give them stems.

Some blue flowers

I’ll post a finished bouquet when I finally have one—and I might add some more flowers to my repertoire before then. If so, I’ll link up the tutorials and show you how it’s going.

Is anyone else forgoing real flowers?

Cape May Wedding from Blossom Productions

by admin on June 18, 2011, under Wedding Day's

Well, after a beachy keen week of stunning nuptials, many of which took place near the sea, we figured it was fitting to continue the week with a super Super 8 Film from Blossom Productions on – you guessed it – a beach. This Cape May wedding was perfect in every way, and lucky for us, it was all captured in a way that will definitely make you smile, absolutely cause goose bumps, and probably bring a tear to your pretty little eye. We even have a few still shots of the day from Laura Eaton Photography, and their just as amazing as the film. Make sure to visit the gallery for all of them!

Chrissy and Joe

Chrissy and Joe 2

Chrissy and Joe 3

After that little sneak peak, I’m sure you’re dying to jump right in to the Super 8 from Blossom Productions. So here we go!

Chrissy & Joe: Cape May Wedding from Blossom Productions on Vimeo.

From Blossom Productions … Chrissy wanted the vintage, timeless look of film woven throughout her video because she not only loved how it looked but also because it created a feeling of nostalgia. As filmmakers, capturing the sights and sounds of the day are incredibly important. If we can also capture the actual emotion, then that is the icing on the cake.

Chrissy’s father passed away when she was a young girl and many memories of her father occurred in Cape May. She had a locket containing his photograph attached to her bouquet. As we were filming all of the significant, BIG moments, we made sure to capture the not-so-obvious, yet incredibly meaningful, small details. The locket was one of them. In some ways, her dad was with her every step of the way that day.

For all of the thought, energy, and time that went into making sure the day went as planned, these two were also about fun and spontaneity. It was a hot out and on the way to shooting formals on the beach, Chrissy and Joe shared a Slurpee. I don’t know many newly, married brides who’d be daring enough to drink a cherry (bright red!) frozen drink while wearing a white wedding dress!

Chrissy and Joe also understood that there’d be very few occasions in life when the people who meant the most to them would all be in the same room for celebratory occasion. Knowing Chrissy’s past, preserving these memories for her came with an even greater responsibility to do it all right-and for having that opportunity, we were honored.
