That Razzle Dazzle

by admin on May 27, 2011, under Wedding Wear

Way back in the day, I was having some issues deciding on shoes. Because I am oh-so-indecisive. I just couldn’t get my ish together. Same old, same old. Well, really, I just couldn’t stop thinking about these lovelies.

Hello there, beautiful.

They were expensive, but I just could not stop thinking about the bows! And the sparkles! And the pretty slate-grey! And the square, ballerina-slipper-esque toe! Like Cinderella shoes, but cooler.

Anyway, in the happiest of coinkydinks, Kate Spade ended up having a ridoncadonc sale the weekend of my birthday, and Mr. CA, being the sweetheart that he is, decided he wanted to get me these shoes for the reception. (Because we can’t stop thinking about/talking about/ dreaming about/ breathing the wedding in these here parts.) Isn’t he sweet? Really, I think he just got sick of hearing me gush about them. Or, maybe he was tired of driving me to the Kate Spade store and having to watch me stand outside the window, gazing longingly at them inside. I mean, um, no, I didn’t ever do that. And, because the sale was so amazing, he only had to promise up our firstborn child, rather than the first two. What a deal!

Mmm, stripes.

Needless to say, I was quite excited to open them and get those babies on mah feet. Let’s be honest, they do give me a bit of toe-cleavage. But I’ve come to terms with that. My dress is long enough to cover them, really, and if anyone gets a glimpse, they will be razzle-dazzled by the bows and the sequins, and won’t notice my immodest cleavage.

Box within a box.

As per usual, I am obsessed with these shoes. The bottoms are super-smooth, and I slide around on our carpeted floor, so I’m going to need to break them in before the big day. They need a good knifing, perhaps? And let me tell you, I have been so tempted to wear these out and about, particularly since it’s getting nice and sunny. Toe-cleavage be damned – these beauties need to see the light of day! Dang it.

Oh, you want to see them?

Clearly, I love the bows.

Yes, Hive. You have now seen my lack of a badonkadonk. You’re welcome. Happy Friday.

That Razzle Dazzle : wedding seattle shoes Img 36102 IMG_36102

Yummy – blurry toe-cleavage. The best kind.

Obviously, I love them, and I am way too excited to wear these shoes out onto the dance floor. I want the wedding to be here now!! They will just have to wait, I suppose (although I might be wearing them as I type this. Maybe).

Did you get an item of attire gifted to you unexpectedly? Are you planning on wearing different shoes for the ceremony and reception?

Lessons in Wedding Planning: Saying ‘No’ is Hard to Do

by admin on May 26, 2011, under Miscellaneous

I am a people-pleaser by nature. Knowing I’ve hurt someone’s feelings or let someone down are thoughts that way heavily on my conscience—it’s a bit of a curse. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that I value others’ feelings, but at the same time it’s pretty frustrating to have to regularly force myself to consider my feelings, too.

Planning a wedding has really encouraged me to reckon with my inherent need to please because, duh, it’s absolutely impossible to please everyone…particularly when planning a wedding. And here is a word of caution to all of my fellow wedding plannin’, people pleasin’ frenz:

Lessons in Wedding Planning: Saying 'No' is Hard to Do : wedding etiquette san francisco Offend offend

There is no way around it. Whether it’s your friend Lisa who is hurt because she didn’t make the bridesmaid cut or your Uncle Steve pissed off that you aren’t inviting his newest wife’s favorite niece—IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. It’s better to first accept that you aren’t going to please everyone and prepare to go from there.

I could issue you all the standard advice of: “It’s your day! Do whatever the heck you want!” But life is a bit more complex than that. At some point you will have to decide which battles are worth fighting and which ones are better off forfeited.

Let me give you a couple of examples.

Scenario 1: Your Aunt Betty is donating to your wedding fund and offers up her ruby bracelet for you to wear on the big day. You sense that this would mean a lot to her but it won’t quite coordinate with your already-selected jewelry. Decline the offer or happily oblige?

Scenario 2: For budgeting purposes, your guest list has been trimmed and you’ve taken a firm stance on the plus ones—limiting them to long-term significant others. Your close single friend John, however, thinks he should be able to bring whoever he’d like and outright asks to do so. What do you do?

I’d personally choose to acquiesce to sweet Aunt Betty and wear the bracelet but stick to my guns with John the serial dater and decline the add-on.

Honestly, hive, there are no standardized right or wrong answers because every situation is different—just know that questions like these are hiding in and around nearly every wedding-related decision and you’ll have to field them accordingly. I think I was ill-prepared for these tough decisions and let them blindside me a bit at first. Coming from an eager-to-please mindset, while I’d love to say yes to everyone, I’ve finally come to accept that I will inevitably ruffle some feathers with a few nos.

As my Nana used to say, “Say ’yes’ as often as possible, and when you say ’no’…really mean it.” Oh, and when you tick someone off along the way…vent to the hive.

Gimme your five! Who have you let down in planning your wedding? How do you tackle the tough decisions?

Lincoln Wedding by Geoff Johnson Photographer

by admin on May 25, 2011, under Wedding Day's

If I were a dress, I would so be this Vera Wang number. Not only is it a ruffled dream but it gets to witness some of the most drop-dead gorgeous weddings. We are talking all out GLAMOUR like this Nebraska beauty captured by Geoff Johnson Photographer. And this is but the tip of the whole pretty iceberg. Get your gallery on for more from the day.

From the Bride… Kendall and I met in 6th grade.  We were on the same “team” in middle school and that is where my lifelong crush started.  After going through all of middle school and high school together, all the while me having a huge crush on him, we started dating our senior year at Lincoln East High School.

On the weekend of our 4 year anniversary, Kendall and I went out to San Diego, CA with my family.  On the night of our anniversary, having no idea what we were going to be doing or where we would be going, a driver and car pulled up in front of my parent’s house.  The driver drove us to Torrey Pines State Reserve where Kendall had a spot picked out, high overlooking the ocean.  With the sweetest words and most romantic spot, that is where he proposed.  Then we ate at the Sky Room and La Valencia Hotel.  After dinner, we walked down to meet our driver and to my surprise, Kendall’s parents had flown in to surprise me.  The rest of the night was spent drinking champagne and looking forward to marrying my best friend.

My wedding inspiration was a simple, classic, but contemporary, chic look.  Clean lines, white orchids, rich pewter, and a splash of coral.  I wanted every piece of the ceremony and reception to be cohesive. I achieved that look by carrying through different aspects such as: letterpress invitations to letterpress menus, our monogram, silk organza dress and the head table runner that matched my dress.

One of my favorite special touches was our monogram.  We had a Lincoln calligrapher design it for us and it was on everything from napkins and invitations to the cake.  Another special piece was on the head table we had a runner that my mother-in-law made to mimic my dress.  It spilled over the top of the table so you saw it as soon as guests entered the ballroom.

As the wedding day is such a blur, as I assume it is to many other brides, many of the memories I have come from the beautiful pictures we got. From my mom helping me put on my dress, to walking down the aisle and seeing Kendall, to our first dance.  Though a specific special memory during our ceremony was the duet.  A couple sang “The Prayer” and I just remember looking and Kendall and I could feel the power of the song. Our first kiss was also a favorite memory because we had spent the days prior to the wedding “deciding on a kiss” (haha) and then when it came down to it, I got so excited I jumped into his arms and remember the best feeling.

Colorful Wedding Gowns of the Stars

From the blush pink dress in Reese Witherspoon’s recent wedding to the pitch black gown worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in her 1997 nuptials, some celebrities are pushing tradition aside when it comes to bridal style.  The classic white wedding dress is still the most sought after gown, but for rebellious brides or second-time-around ceremonies, color can change it all.  Here’s a bit of inspiration for all you rule breakers.

Board #529: Pretty Preppy Stripes

by admin on May 25, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

If you’re a long time reader of Snippet & Ink, then you know how much I love a classic green and white wedding – it’s always such a timeless choice, and a look that is easy to execute well. Today, I wanted to take that classic palette and give it a fun and preppy kick with some stripes: a skirt for the bridesmaids, an under cloth for the table, a tie for the groom. Maybe envelope liners, too? I love simple details that, while elegant, are totally DIY-able, like fruit bowl centerpieces and finger sandwiches. White calligraphy on green envelopes is a playful and updated touch. And the cap sleeved eyelet dress from Lilly Pulitzer is so perfectly preppy, it seemed made for this inspiration board.

Mood: classic playful preppy

The Kiss by the Hotel de Ville Inspiration Board

Robert Doisneau’s Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville now stands symbolic of young love in Paris.  As the world whirls by, time stands still for two lovers and nothing matters at all but each other.  When it’s young love, even the simple luxuries like sugary cakes, pink champagne and a scooter ride for two are pure romance.  Here’s to a wedding that reflects the start of it all, the kiss.

Our (Semi) DIY Save the Dates

by admin on May 17, 2011, under Wedding Stationery

For some reason, I’ve always wanted to do a save-the-date magnet. Looking back on it now, I’m not sure why I was so obsessed with the idea, but it turned out cool anyway…

I used Photoshop to create the design for the magnets. Then I uploaded my design on Vistaprint onto one of their magnet options. I chose one of their invitation designs and customized it with my text and font choices. When they arrived, I used a small piece of fashion two-sided tape to adhere the magnet to the back of the main card (which I included the word “magnet” on so that people would know what it was). I then tied some twine (which I bought off of Etsy) around it into a bow.

I also included a paper on lodging information so that everyone could start planning and get an idea of where to start looking and what things are going to cost.

The save the dates were only sent to the people who will be attending the wedding in Colorado, which includes immediate family and our wedding party. We’ll be sending invitations for the at-home reception to everyone else separately.

Anyone else doing their own invitations to save money?

Revenge of the Peony

by admin on May 16, 2011, under Wedding Flowers

Remember my devious plan to elicit tears from our wedding guests? (Quick update: it involves old family photos, sentimental flowers and trinkets.)

I had everything except for the flowers and so turned to our florist to add a few additional blooms to the procurement list. She loved the idea but my chosen flowers are springtime blooms in our area; the likelihood of them being available (read: reasonably priced) would be slim. She suggested I look for silk versions of a calla lily, peony and pansy. While not resistant to using silk flowers, I was skeptical about locating all three. Sure, the calla lily and peony would be a snap, but pansies? I’d never seen a silk version before.

Off Mr. PaC and I went: me to Michaels, him to neighboring Lowes. Imagine my surprise when pansies were the first silk flower I found. With the option of purple or yellow to boot! Two bunches of purple pansies found their way home with me.

There were also several options for calla lilies. I almost bought an off-white one until spotting the crisp white ones.

Finding a suitable peony was tougher. None of them fully represented the “bomb” type of peony flower or bubblegum pink color of our family’s specimen. All the store carried was the “full double” bloom. So I settled on the one below because… it’s close enough to make the point. And the family members who know the difference will appreciate the gesture.

I was still holding out hope that my mom’s peonies would bloom during our wedding week and we’d have the real deal. Alas, it was not meant to be. Mom texted this photo yesterday:

Revenge of the Peony : wedding flowers wilmington Peony2 peony2

“Look what’s blooming – they couldn’t wait for your wedding!”

Even with a late start and partial-sun location, they’re peaking now. Three weeks early. Their fleeting beauty only lasts a week. Better to know now that we’re using the Plan B silk blooms.

Big thanks to my florist for tipping me off on the seasonality of the blooms and suggesting the use of silk flowers (for so many practical reasons).

Are you using silk or paper flowers to supplement your flowers?

I Do…Etsy

by admin on May 15, 2011, under Wedding Wear

Ladies, I have finally made the plunge. My first Etsy purchase! (Can you tell I’m excited??) OK, it’s not even really a purchase yet, but I have put down a deposit on a custom order for my jewellery. After spending some weeks poring over pictures of glittery earrings, I have finally chosen (a few) items I will buy.

Hair comb:

Small pearl drop earrings:

Kind of a mish-mash! I really wanted big sparkly earrings, but I’m also a little hesitant that they might be too heavy for the whole wedding day, so I wanted to get something smaller as well as a safeguard. The pearl ones here match the rest of the jewellery, so after the wedding I will have some nice jewellery to mix and match when I go out in the evening. (Or to the office—whatever I want!)

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do for my hair because my sister-in-law is already loaning me her fingertip veil; so I didn’t really need to buy my own veil despite all those adorable birdcage and cathedral-length veils out there. I did think I wanted something extra to put in my hair, and while I kept looking at pretty flowers, fascinators, headbands, and sashes that could be tied into the hair, I just thought they were too much or random or weird. So many pretty things to choose from, but I just wanted something sparkly to put in my hair that would actually match my other jewellery.

Carla from Lulu Splendor is actually going to make all my jewellery together at the same time, so it will definitely all match. Nice plus! I’m so excited to work with her. I fell in love with her chandelier earrings…they look perfect—not too over the top but oh-so glam.

Originally I decided I’m NOT wearing a necklace with my dress because it’s way too sparkly and has a whole lot going on on its own. So I focused on searching for the perfect earrings. But when I was looking at Carla’s work, it was so pretty I kind of wanted it just for me (and the hubs) to enjoy later on. I’m sure Mr. Funnel Cake would love seeing me in a low-back dress with that pearl necklace dangling there…

At first I was going to get just the flower necklace, but they were both too tempting to pass up. I’m totally falling for the wedding-splurge excuse…but really, I don’t buy myself jewellery or clothing in general that often in this country, so I think it’s OK to get something nice for the big day. In fact, the first and last time I bought jewellery in Switzerland was for our civil union!

Carla has pretty bracelets as well, but I’m really not a bracelet girl. They just get in the way of doing functional things like using computers, so while it might be OK for the wedding (or annoy the crap out of me), it wouldn’t be an item I would wear a lot after the big day. I will decide if I want to wear either or neither of the necklaces when I try the dress on again in October! If it’s no to both, then I can always wear one of them to the rehearsal dinner or on the honeymoon or something.

Did you end up splurging on yourself because of the wedding? Which accessories were most important for you to nail down first? Did you surprise yourself getting something you originally thought you’d vetoed?
