Wedding Planning—It’s Not a Solo Endeavor

by admin on January 25, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Whatever you think, honey.

That’s often the refrain brides hear from their grooms during planning, and for some brides I think that’s what they want to hear while wedding planning! Except what about those of us with partners who appreciate and understand that this is their wedding day, too, and actually want to have a say in how that day turns out?

Throughout the wedding-planning process, I’ve spent a lot of time reading wedding-planning websites, articles, and blogs. Many of these sites are written by women, and a lot of the decisions that are made about weddings tend to be made by the bride. But what about the groom? What about when he wants to be involved? It seems like the easy answer is, hey, if the groom wants to be involved, then the groom is involved! But what about when your fiance wants to be involved in some aspects of the wedding and couldn’t care less about other parts? And what do you do when you can’t always figure out which parts of the wedding he’s going to care about? Yeah…that’s called I’m still figuring it out.

First off, I have to say that Mr. EB has been pretty fantastic throughout planning. But it still throws me off both when he has an opinion and when he doesn’t. It’s confusing, no?

See, Mr. EB is usually pretty opinionated. So it’s no surprise he has opinions about his wedding day. However, there are lots of details about this day that quite frankly he doesn’t care at all about. So is it really that strange that I’m confused about when he’s going to care and when he’s not??

The issue is mainly that I’m never quite sure whether a project that I’m working on is going to be something that he’ll care about. I’ve gotten the “whatever you want is fine” line so many times, but every so often there’s a “why on earth did you pick that??” thrown in there (generally said nicer than that, but usually accompanied by some pretty awesome facial expressions). And by that point I’ve generally done a fair amount of work and had no idea that he was going to care, and what do you mean you want me to change things?!!

Luckily there really hasn’t been too much of that. But it does make things difficult when he’s super busy and can’t make every meeting, and I’m left wondering if it’s something that he’s going to care about. But again, because he’s busy, I don’t want to annoy him by running every single thought that I have about the wedding by him; most of the time he really doesn’t have a preference and is fine with whatever I decide.

Has anyone else had to deal with this? How did you end up handling it?

Saying Yes to a Twice Loved Dress

by admin on January 25, 2011, under Wedding Dresses

For weeks after dress shopping I was torn between the styles of Monique Lhuillier’s Monet and Sabine. I took the “look for less” approach and identified some alternatives that were within my budget and also kept tabs on the various online used wedding dress retailers. I prepared to make appointments at other bridal salons. Late one night as I suffered from a case of insomnia, I was restlessly browsing Once Wed and saw it. The right size. The right length. The right price. I stared at the listing. I drummed my fingers on the keyboard and furtively looked around my dark apartment.

*squee*

Personal photo from my dress fairy

I clicked on the “email seller” button, and within 24 hours I was on my way to getting the dress of my dreams. This dress has actually been worn *twice* before it ended up in my hands and had been hemmed for a 5’3″ frame + heels. Both factors probably played a big role in the price point. None of these changed the fact that I was still extremely nervous about making the commitment to buy. For any ladies thinking of going the used wedding dress route, here are some takes from the Tartlet that will hopefully give you more confidence in your decision making process:

  • Go over the listing with a fine-toothed comb. Pay attention to all the measurements and alterations. I can’t tell you how many listings I came across that read “Street Size: X” but the measurements were nowhere near that size. Often times the description will contain details of further alterations. A common one is altering a straight neckline to a sweetheart neckline.
  • Ask about the cleaning/preservation method AND how the dress has been stored since the wedding. Along the same lines, check whether the seller lives in a smoking home or with pets. If you can’t tell from the pictures, it doesn’t hurt to ask what kind of wedding the bride had (indoors vs. outdoors) so you’re aware of potential dirt/damage issues. Ask for the dress to be shipped in the dry cleaning bag and/or to include the dry cleaning receipt.
  • Ask for additional, personal pictures. Don’t rely on pro pics to accurately show the state of the dress after it’s been worn for 8 hours and seen a dance floor. BM Tanya made a great suggestion, which was to ask for close-up pictures of the hem. That’s likely to be the dirtiest part of the dress, with a high probability of damage. Something I didn’t do was to ask for a close-up picture of the bustle. My dress *blissful sigh* had one added in, and upon closer inspection the seamstress had used BLACK thread to sew the ties in. Odd? Yes.
  • Just because an accessory is shown in the pictures, doesn’t mean it’s included in the listing itself. Especially since there are some gorgeous sashes out there, make sure it’s included in the dress price! I came across a couple sellers who wore the sash for their wedding, but either didn’t want to part with it or wanted to charge extra.
  • Don’t forget to take into account shipping when you set the maximum price point. My dress was shipped via FedEx and it cost an additional $40. I would also strongly recommend insuring the package; accidents do happen and you need to protect yourself.
  • Use a secure payment method (like PayPal or escrow). If a seller asks for cash or a personal check, forget it.

How did I know to pick this dress over the Sabine that had everyone in tears at the bridal shop? Once I sat down and thought things through, I realized that I loved Sabine because of everyone else’s reaction to it (especially my mom’s). Not to sound disrespectful, but after I took them out of the equation there was simply no comparison. Know thyself, know thy dress. I knew I would regret missing out on the ravishing details of the Monet that make me giddy with delight.

*chortles* And a glimpse of my darling dress on me thanks to a self-timer and a few well placed boxes:

How about it, ladies? Would you consider wearing a used wedding dress?

Venue Vents

by admin on January 23, 2011, under Wedding Venues

Today, I wanted to talk a little bit about finding a venue. This was pretty difficult for me. Before I was officially engaged, I had my heart set on getting married at Fallingwater, a home designed by the awesome architect, Frank Lloyd Wright.

*swoon*

This dream was dashed after my parents told me how disappointed they would be if I didn’t marry in the Catholic church. Plus, this venue only fits 125 people, and we need room for about 300.

Next, we had to think about a venue that could fit that many people and that was less than 30 minutes from my church. I would have loved to have had the reception at the WVU alumni center, but they were already booked. After that fell through, hotels were the only venues I could find that could accommodate our number of guests. (Can you imagine that many people in a tent?!) I started e-mailing hotels and was having trouble finding packages that included things we wanted for under $200 per person + gratuity + tax. I find this absolutely ridiculous for my region. It would be something I would expect from a large city, but not my little town! There had better be two penny weights of gold in that slightly overcooked chicken before I pay that much!

I did find a gorgeous ballroom in a historic hotel downtown that would have been PERFECT, but it would only fit 175. When I found this out, I totally had a Mary/Joseph moment.

Venue Vents : wedding morgantown venues Venuep1 venuep1

Enter: Lakeview Resort. I had thought of Lakeview since it is close to my home, has beautiful views, and would provide gorgeous photographs. I was so nervous coming into the meeting with the coordinator because if this plan fell through, we may have had to hold the reception at Panera. Luckily, the prices she quoted were far more reasonable than the other packages I was given at the other venues. My mom signed the contract on the spot, and a huge load was lifted from my shoulders. Unfortunately, we couldn’t reserve the room with the view of the lake, as it only fit 250. I truly hope we have at least 251 people showing up to our wedding, or I’m going to be a little irked.

The space is a fairly generic hotel ballroom, so they don’t really advertise photos of it, though there are plenty of pictures of the space with the view of the lake. (Imagine that!) I could have been a total creeper and snatched some photos of my venue off of Facebook, but I decided against it.

Here are a few pictures of the venue’s view.

Did any of you have these headaches while trying to choose a venue? Did it all end up working out in the end, or did you end up with a concussion from smashing your head against a wall?

Laced with Love: The Dress Change Remixed

by admin on January 20, 2011, under Wedding Dresses

In many Chinese-American weddings, brides change into a traditional Chinese dress called a qi pao (pronounced chi-pow). First off, it’s a beautiful, but unforgiving dress. Here are a few images I found on the web:

(source)

In my mind, it’s most traditionally worn in red with gold shoes, both colors associated with good luck. Well, I’ve never been much of a traditionalist so I didn’t want to wear a qi pao. After all, my wedding dress was the most expensive dress I’d ever bought and I did love it ever so much, so why would I change out of it?! Nevertheless, being a good daughter, I asked my Mom if she wanted me to partake in this tradition. She said that I didn’t need to do it if I didn’t want to. Just to be sure, a couple months later, I asked her again because it would take a couple months to have a qi pao made for me. She said no again. Since I had asked twice, I decided she was sure.

Two weeks before the wedding, we were out shopping for accessories for her outfit for the wedding and as we were walking through the mall she said, “So, don’t you think you should do a dress change?”

*insert record scratch here*

It was two weeks before the wedding, I had checked twice and NOW she was asking for a dress change?! We both agreed that there’d be no time to get a qi pao made so she suggested a “normal” special occasion dress as my change. I agreed, and we began looking. As we walked through the mall, I tried on various dresses in ivory, white and green, our wedding colors, but couldn’t find anything I liked. The next day, I said that if I couldn’t find a dress, we’d forget the whole idea. We headed to another mall and I tried on every white, ivory and green dress I could lay my hands on. I decided another color wouldn’t really match. But then, with an armful of dresses, I found a reddish pink dress and fell in love!

I took it along with me to the dressing room and saved it for last. Every dress was a no until I changed into the little red number. Through the dressing room door, I said, “Mom, it’s not the right color. If they only had it in white or something, I think I’d buy this dress!” I opened the door and she said, “it’s perfect! It’s RED! You can wear this red dress instead of a red qi pao!” It turned out to be perfect compromise for my mom and me. Red for my mom and gorgeous for me! :)

So, here it is, my red dress change remixed –

The Rest of My Accessories

by admin on January 19, 2011, under Wedding Wear

I’ve talked a bit about some of my wedding day accessories—my veil and the earrings that my aunt is letting me borrow. As for the rest of my jewelry, well, that was actually my first official wedding purchase!

Awhile back I was searching through Etsy (I love that site—I still can’t believe it was founded by a twenty-something guy!), and I came across Sweet Findings 4 You’s shop. I really love her pieces, and I knew exactly which ones I wanted. I purchased this necklace and bracelet set, and I love pulling them out when I think about what I’ll be wearing on our wedding day!

I love the combination of the pearls with the flower detail. And even better—I was looking at pictures of my cousin’s wedding (she wore the same earrings that I’ll be borrowing), and I think the earrings should work out really well. And if I end up mixing metals, I’m pretty sure no one will notice (or care!).

Now I just need to remember to take off my ever-present watch (I’ve had the same watch since high school—it’s functionally great, but aesthetically not something I want in pictures), especially as I’m pretty sure other people will keep track of the time just fine for me that day.

What kind of jewelry are you wearing for your wedding?

Board #514: Peach Glass & Sea Foam

by admin on January 13, 2011, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

More pink and green today! Although this time there’s something blue in it, too…

Sometimes a single photo can inspire an entire event, and in the case of this inspiration board, it’s the delicious peach pic from What Katie Ate. That lovely blue on the rim of the plate, the soft white linen napkin, and of course the baked peaches. Mmmm…. The romantic garden feel came next: lace wedding dress, antique cameo ring, garden roses. And though this palette works splendidly in the Palm House at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, I think it could also work for a pretty beach wedding.

Mood: sweet garden romance
Palette: sea foam blue, cameo peach, white linen

Top row from left: peach dessert on blue plate from What Katie Ate, wild bouquet with pink satin ribbon from Martha Stewart Weddings, lace cap-sleeve dress by Christos, calligraphy by Maria Thomas

Row 3: bouquet of peach garden roses and old fashioned roses by Ariella Chezar (photo by Corbin Gurkin), linen hemstitch napkin with sage green monogram from Leontine Linens, vintage cameo ring from Morning Glory Antiques, photo of blue bridesmaid dresses by You Look Nice Today
