Couples ‘spending less’ on wedding planning

by admin on October 22, 2010, under Miscellaneous

Couples are not spending as much on their wedding planning as they once did, it has been claimed.

According to Florida Today, the global economic downturn means many brides and grooms have to be a little thriftier with the way they spend their money.

As a result, they are picking smaller and more intimate wedding venues as well as cutting back on needless extras.

However, this is not deterring people and they are still as eager as ever to tie the knot, the publication continued.

Susan Coggins, president of the Brevard County Bridal Association and owner of Satellite Beach-based Wedding Belles, said: "We have found that guest lists are less and to do a wedding of about 100 people is average now as opposed to 150 to 300 or more."

Writing for Gazette Xtra yesterday (October 21st), recently married Gina Duwe explained although she misses the excitement of her big day, she is glad she does not have to worry about wedding planning any more.

My B.O.S.S. – Bridal Online Support System

by admin on October 20, 2010, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Mr. Meerkat and I are the first ones of our friends to get engaged. At first it was really fun being the only ones, but after a little bit it kind of felt lonely. I mean, our family and friends have been great but it just wasn’t the same as talking to other brides.

I was happy when I found online bridal communities like Weddingbee and Offbeat Bride Tribe and was able to talk to other brides. I also got to I meet my B.O.S.S. there:

My B.O.S.S. - Bridal Online Support System : wedding relationships riviera maya Jax jax

source

Meet Jax. She is my Bridal Online Support System or B.O.S.S. as she nicknamed herself. *grin*

Jax and I actually start talking on Offbeat Bride Tribe and soon discovered we were two peas in the same pod.

We were both brides that liked unique and sometimes crazy ideas. It was really great to have someone to talk to who was also planning a wedding but wasn’t related to me (because let’s face it—no matter how great your family is, everyone has an opinion about your wedding). Plus, every time we came across something that went with the other persons wedding we sent it over. We have listen to each other vent when things frustrated us and helped to calm each other down when things went wrong.

I asked Jax to tell everyone in her own words about being my B.O.S.S.

The great thing the internet has is tons of other brides just like me. If you are lucky you can befriend one who has a job which allows her to talk on gchat as much as she wants, just like me! That’s how I found Miss Meerkat. Every time I posted something she’d comment immediately and so I started wondering if she was doing the same thing I was. We exchanged vitals and from that point on I had the perfect sounding board—someone who didn’t really know me but was getting to know me through my ideas of my wedding. I could ask her about her opinion on anything and she would give me her honest opinion. It was very helpful when I was trying to choose between two specific items online and I could send her both links. Miss Meerkat was the tie breaker on many wedding issues and through out our online bridal rendezvous we have become great friends or a Bridal Online Support System, as I like to call it. My wedding was made happier and easier because of her and I can’t wait for her to have her wedding to Mr. Meerkat. I just wish I could be there. :)

This past July Jax and her mister got married but that hasn’t stopped her from being my support system. I bounce ideas of her about our wedding and she bounces ideas off me about home decor. Because of online bridal communities I got to start a great friendship with an amazing woman. Thank you Jax for being there to listen to me!

Have you formed an amazing friendship because of your wedding?

Decorate wedding flowers with berries

by admin on October 20, 2010, under Wedding Flowers

There is no need for brides to make their wedding flowers loud and garish, as keeping it simple with a few berries can have just as dramatic an impact.

Speaking to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Carl Shaw, owner of Carl Alan Floral Designs, said simplicity can be beautiful and the use of berries as accent pieces lifts a bouquet to another level.

He stated that for him, using one colour for a single flower can illuminate a wedding venue and look beautiful, with blooms that make a statement by themselves being one of his favourite things.

While some may find a single colour monotonous, Mr Shaw said that carefully placed berries can add another dimension to the bouquet.

"A light or whitish hypericum berry or winter berry … I would place them at certain points in the bouquet as highlights and it breaks up – in certain people's mind – the monotony of one flower or very few colours," he told the newspaper.

According to stltoday.com, hiring a florist to create the perfect bouquets is not a straightforward task.

Among the things couples must consider when choosing a florist are friends' recommendations and their budgetary constraints.

Whatever colour scheme or style of wedding you choose, be sure to find a matching flower in the hitched.co.uk wedding flowers section

Board #505: Darkly, Deeply, Beautifully Blue

by admin on October 20, 2010, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

Two of the most wonderfully opulent things I can think of are chinoiserie wallpaper, and calligraphy by the inimitable Bernard Maisner. So, today, a wonderfully opulent inspiration board for you that includes both of those elements. Wouldn’t you love to attend a wedding like this? And don’t you think Jasper Conran’s Chinoiserie pattern for Wedgwood works perfectly with this look?

Board #504: Crisp Autumn Countryside

by admin on October 18, 2010, under Wedding Ideas & Advice

We finally had some weather here this weekend – since we don’t really get fall leaves here in the Bay Area, you know the seasons are changing when it’s overcast and raining all day. Not nearly as romantic or charming as a crisp, sunny autumn day with flaming leaves, which is where this inspiration board is coming from. It’s why October was my favorite time in Wisconsin! A cozy white farmhouse surrounded by orange and red leaves, decorated with pumpkins and acorns. Set the table with country linens and arrange flowers in white compotes and pitchers. Fill a table with seasonal desserts like apple cheddar pie and caramel pear tarts, and send your guests home with jars of local jam (this might be a really common wedding favor, but it’s still one of my favorites – for out of town guests, it’s a nice souvenir of their visit, and everyone likes an edible favor).

Mood: crisp autumn, warm farmhouse
Palette: burnt umber, burnt sienna, warm cream, brown tweed

Top row from left: farmhouse with autumn leaves via We Heart It, centerpiece with orange flowers and white compote vase by Matthew Robbins for Martha Stewart Weddings, photo of jam jar favors by Suzy Clement
Row 2: hand-lettered letterpress invitation by Cynthia Warren, variety of pumpkins from Martha Stewart, homespun dessert table by Rebecca Thuss for Martha Stewart Weddings
Row 3: acorn and autumn leaf boutonniere from Martha Stewart Weddings, autumn entrance with pumpkins and leaves from Martha Stewart, photo of red haired bride by Shelly Kroeger, farmhouse linens via Katy Elliott

Don’t forget to enter the NYC photo shoot giveaway, which includes photos and 8mm from A Bryan Photo, plus a $500 travel credit from Traveler’s Joy! Details here.

Queen of Style: Black, White and Classic All Over

by admin on October 18, 2010, under Wedding Dresses

Audrey Hepburn is one of those icons who inspire many to take a step outside of tradition while holding strong to pure class and elegance.  The Givenchy wedding dress she wore in the film Sabrina has created a ripple effect throughout the evening gown and bridal industry with many replicas trying to live up to the simple grace of the original.

Audrey Hepburn Sabrina Givenchy wedding dress

There are many Sabrina-esque styles to choose from, but there are also plenty of new takes on the perfect pairing.  Inspired by the Hepburn era, designers Dolce and Gabbana created a mash-up of old Hollywood style meets rule-breaking Warhol for their Marilyn Monroe portrait bridal gown.

The classic duet of black and white is the go-to palette for any bride wanting the ultimate in sharp sophistication; no other color scheme can impose a state of dramatic luxury quite like it.  Let that paired down polish take center stage in a regal form-fitting number.

black top, white bottom fitted dress

Go the unexpected route with a little Victorian boudoir flavor.  The inverted mix of a traditional white bridal gown beneath a sea of inky petticoat ruffles ushers in a mood of sultry, dark romance.  Sheer layers of shade help to soften this show-stopper:

Float on the clouds in a feathery dream.  Take an otherwise classic color combination and turn it on its head.  In a milky hue, this light and airy gown takes flirty charm to new heights.  It’s the kind of dress that makes you want to sing, “I feel pretty, oh, so pretty…” while twirling around the room.

My personal favorite comes courtesy of a December 2008 Vogue UK photo shoot featuring the eccentric couple of Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter.  The whimsy of the court jester overlay brings a special carnival feel to the dress.  Mix that with any quirky headpiece and you have yourself one vivid and captivating bridal gown.

by admin on October 17, 2010, under Wedding Dresses

Rivini’s collection for Fall 2011 featured dresses inspired by Monet’s Gardens in Giverny, France. Flowers and petals were featured on many of the dresses in incredibly unexpected ways! I definitely had several faves from this show so we’ll open with one and close with another. I couldn’t pick one favorite if I tried!

How about a short dress for my first favorite? That skirt is so fun!

Bridal Market 2010 – Amsale

by admin on October 17, 2010, under Wedding Dresses

Amsale’s fall 2001 collection is as modern as ever. I left this show wistful to get married all over again so I could wear one of these stunning gowns. Soft and structured at the same time—Amsale makes it happen.

To kick off this post, a “very Amsale” dress. To me, to wear Amsale is to really rock her natural waisted ball gown signature style! I’d have to say this was my favorite dress as well, with the gorgeous crinkle silk chiffon skirt:
