When to buy your wedding dress

  • September 30, 2010 at 11:40 am

Wedding planning can be a time-consuming process and some people may spend longer on it than others.

But according to one publication, the thing women must arrange well in advance is their wedding dress.

In an article for Helium, Timmy Duncan claims the further ahead brides-to-be pick their gown, the less stressed they will be.

He says purchasing in advance will allow plenty of time for alterations to be made to the frock.

Similarly, if anything goes wrong, it gives women the chance to make changes and deal with the problem without getting into a flap.

However, Mr Duncan warns brides not to confuse themselves by looking at too many frocks and getting overwhelmed.

"You want enough time to handle any changes to the dress, but not enough time to begin second guessing your decision," he concludes.

To complement their gown, brides may want to follow the advice of Perfect Wedding editor Helen Webster and opt for soft, romantic hairstyles with decorative flowers or tiaras as an accessory.

Queen of Style: Bridal Gowns Go Cocktail Hour

  • September 27, 2010 at 1:49 am

Marchesa short dress spring 2011

The elegant mini dress is no longer reserved for cocktail hour.  Just about every collection prancing down the runway at New York Fashion Week’s spring 2011 showing featured at least one short bridal gown proving that though tradition holds strong, there is still plenty of room to play.

And play, they did.  With the bridezilla mantra, “I’ve never heard of ‘Here Comes the Groom;’ it’s my wedding!” freshly ringing in their heads from a marathon of WEtv’s Bridezillas, top designers went all out creating some major bridal eye-catchers.  Case in point, the cheeky (in more ways than one) little number above by Marchesa.

The “It’s about me and me only” Dress

Want to guarantee that no one misses your moment as The Almighty and All-Powerful Supreme Ruler of the Universe and…I mean beautiful blushing bride?  Take the spotlight, and I don’t mean just one, but all the spotlights in the venue, as you make your grand entrance in a show-stopping number like the glamorous Oscar de la Renta piece on the left or the Monique Lhuillier creation on the right.

The “I’m not a normal looking girl.  I’m absolutely stunning” Dress

Stun the crowd as you dominate the aisle in a demurely detailed bridal frock.  You’re not the average bride causing family and friends to well at the eyes.  You’re stealing the show and causing jaws to drop as you bring the party to the altar.  Melissa Sweet by Priscilla of Boston opts for softly swept, over-sized ruffles while Victoria Nicole keeps it neat, tidy and fitted to perfection.

The “I always get what I want” Dress

Many bridezilla’s seem to share the battle cry of, “It’s my day!”  Keep it your day and not necessarily your dress’ day by bringing the wow factor in an understated way.  Flawless construction, as demonstrated by these two Amsale wedding dresses, will cause every neck to crane.  The minimalist design grabs your guest’s attention then allows the focus to travel straight to you, where it should stay for the rest of your day.

‘Unlucky’ wedding dates can save money

  • September 20, 2010 at 11:34 am

When couples book a wedding venue for their big day, they could save money by marrying on an 'unlucky' date.

Jade Pearson, deputy editor of Wedding Ideas magazine, said because occasions such as Friday 13th or April 1st are considered to be bad luck, couples will often find they never get booked up.

She said if they are not superstitious, they could save a considerable amount of money by choosing one of these dates when wedding planning.

Similarly, less-popular days of the week can also reduce the cost of the ceremony.

Rachel Morgan, editor of Wedding Ideas magazine, said she married on a Thursday.

Although this meant some friends and relatives could not make it, the guest list was easy to draw up "and the people who really wanted to make the effort came and we had a lovely day for half the price than it would be on a Saturday", she explained.

Meanwhile, Canton FX recently revealed increasing numbers of couples are choosing to tie the knot abroad.

Wedding invitations are the first step towards filling your wedding with friends and family. Make sure you do it right by getting the wedding invitations right.

Obsessing Over Invitations (Again!)

  • September 18, 2010 at 10:00 pm

I’ve been obsessed with wedding invitations lately. I know, I know. What else is new?

It’s crazy. I feel like a German shepherd looking for a missing child. Seriously, that’s how I feel. Whenever I see invitations, my ears perk up, my sense of smell improves, and my eyes pop out a little. I feel like I need to find them. Like I should have found them yesterday.

I know it’s going to take me aaawwwhhiillleee to decide on our invites. It takes me aaawwwhhhiiilllleee to decide on pretty much everything, so the invitations (being one of the most important elements of our wedding) are hardly an exception. I worry that if I don’t find them and the time comes when we have to order something, I’m going to be a ball of tears crying, “But, but, I don’t know what I want!”

Like many of you, my search began on the Internet. I searched thousands of stationery websites—thousands, I tell ya! Who knew stationery was such a booming buisness?

I even ordered samples! I’ve ordered about a dozen, hoping each time those would be the ones. I only really like one of the samples I ordered, and it’s from Wedding Paper Divas:

My other inspiration is solely from online. I haven’t seen these in person, but I still think they deserve a spot among my favorites. Remember the invitations I swore were perfect a few weeks back (see my post about it here)? The pretty green and peach ones I absolutely adore! Here’s a picture to jog your memory:

Well, I think I can add the Whimsical Scroll Wedding Invitations from Blush Paperie to my invitation-inspiration file. See below.

Purple is definitely not my color, but the good news is that fonts and colors are customizable! Yippee! Look at the same invitation in our colors:

Gorgeous, no? Big difference, huh?

Way big difference. I love this design in the green and pink. It’s festive, feminine, and do you see those butterflies?!? Where did they come from? They weren’t on the original design, but I love them! These were obviously made for me! They are subtle and go really well with our garden theme…

Could these be the ones for us? More to come on this later.

How did you decide on your invitations?

Prom-style dresses ‘key look from British Bridal Exhibition’

  • September 16, 2010 at 11:58 am

Alternative wedding dresses look set to be all the rage at celebrations this year.

The British Bridal Exhibition took place at Harrogate International Centre between September 12th and 14th and plenty of alternative styles were sent down the catwalks.

Many designers chose shorter, prom-style frocks instead of large, full-skirted creations.

Similarly, slinky gowns made from sleek satin fabrics were also debuted by the likes of Anoushka G and Lusan Mandongus, with the latter bringing a Grecian feel to the garments with subtle pleats and thin, one-shouldered straps.

Long wedding dresses were also the order of the day for Crystal Breeze, with one stand-out design featuring pearl detailing across the chest, which is set to be a key trend when spring arrives.

Among the other designers showing off their spring/summer 2011 collections were Amanda Wyatt, Maxima, Veromia and Justin Alexander.

Colourful gowns also look set to be popular among brides-to-be, as boutique owner Angela Wilson recently told the Sydney Morning Herald that women are using shoes, sashes and hair pieces to bring brighter tones to their attire.

Who Doesn’t Want a Little More Bling??

  • September 15, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Yay for more diamonds! What girl doesn’t love a little more bling?

When it came to looking for a wedding band, I was actually the easy shopper. I’m a sucker for matching, so my band will be princess cut diamonds to match those in the band of my engagement ring. Here’s a little refresher on my e-ring:

And the matching band to go with it:

Easy peasy, and I’m done.

On the other hand, we have Mr. E. He didn’t want a simple band. He wanted something unique with a little bling, which I’m all for. Why should I be the only one with some diamonds? :)

Due to his job, I thought it would be best to get a tougher metal to keep up with the dings that are sure to come. We looked into tungsten and titanium, and decided that we liked the weight of the tungsten better then the “light weight” feel of titanium. I’m very happy with the ring Mr. E picked out because it is unique, has a little bling, and most importantly is something that he will want to wear for the rest of his life.

And here is a little photo shoot I did with all three of our rings!

Dress Time!

  • September 15, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Now that everyone else was ready, it was my turn to slip on my dress. My stomach was all fluttery and I couldn’t wait to put it on. I felt like my hands were shaky and my heart was racing, but it was all because of the excitement. It was our wedding day!!

I got my shoes ready:

And, put on my wedding day jewelry:

I stepped into my dress:

Here’s where things got difficult. I’d purposely worn a dress that I could just slide off that didn’t have to go over my head. But this meant that I would be standing there nakey in my really hot Spanx, and I didn’t think anyone needed to see that, nor did we need to get video or pictures of that. So, my sister held up my wedding dress as I slipped off my other dress and tried not to mess up my hair.

Dress Time! : wedding dallas pictures pro pics recap 7 7

I was in! Now it was time to zip it up. Of course, my niece and flower girl was there to help:

Dress Time! : wedding dallas pictures pro pics recap 102 10

And just to be sure nothing fell out, I gave my dress an extra tug:

Then, I put on my Something Blue shoes. Again, my niece helped (with her silly bandz on):

Then I was all ready for our big reveal!

Top tips for autumn wedding flowers

  • September 14, 2010 at 11:47 am

Brides tying the knot in an autumn ceremony should take advantage of some seasonal blooms when choosing their wedding flowers.

This is according to an article posted on Helium by Jillian McCoy, who said there is a wealth of vibrant flora for women to select from.

"From the season's harvest to the falling leaves, autumn sees some of Mother Nature's most beautiful shades. There's also a whole rainbow of in-season flowers for a fall wedding," she advised.

While brides can choose from a variety of roses, orchids and stephanotis, Ms McCoy claimed hydrangeas can make the perfect centrepiece to an autumnal celebration.

Dahlia are another good option, as they come in red, brown and golden tones, while the expert described the aster as a classic bloom to complement the larger wedding flowers.

Writing for the same publication, Michele Wilmonen advised women to use stands of "fall-coloured ivy" to get a cascading look to their bouquets.

Brides ‘adding colour to their wedding dresses’

  • September 14, 2010 at 11:44 am

Many brides are choosing to add a splash of colour to their wedding dress when they walk down the aisle.

This is according to bridal boutique owner Angela Wilson, who spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald about some of the top trends for nuptials.

She explained pure white frocks are not always the most flattering for brides, so "cafe" and ivory tones are often favoured.

Ms Wilson also said she currently stocks a blush light pink dress.

Some brides may want to complement their wedding flowers with some vibrant shades in their outfit.

"Whether it is a coloured sash, bright shoes, bright jewellery, something bright in the hair, they are jazzing it up with some colour," Ms Wilson added.

One person who shunned white on her big day was Sarah Jessica Parker, as she famously wore a black gown to marry husband Matthew Broderick.

However, since the occasion she has said she regrets this decision.

Makeup trials ‘important before the big day’

  • September 10, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Brides-to-be have been advised to have a trial makeup run before donning their wedding dress and walking down the aisle.

An article posted on isubscribe draws attention to tips from Perfect Wedding magazine, which tells brides to try out different hairdos so they know how they will look on the big day.

They should also get an early night before the event, so they look fresh and radiant when they meet their husband-to-be at the altar.

However, beauty regimes need to be started well in advance, according to the publication, as women should begin getting in shape a year before they arrive at the wedding venue.

Similarly, it is a good idea to visit a beautician a few months before the occasion to establish a routine and ensure skin is perfect and glowing.

Karen Loraine, founder of the Makeup Box, recently advised women to avoid bronzer and instead choose a warm, rosy-coloured blusher during the colder months of the year.

From sugared almonds to sweet gifts for your bridesmaids, the hitched.co.uk wedding shop caters for your every need.
