Monogram Magnificence

  • January 29, 2010 at 9:01 pm

As usual, in my wedding planning quest, I have stumbled upon some things that I feel compelled to purchase, even if they aren’t completely necessary…

Exhibit A: custom monograms!

I stumbled upon a bevy of monograms on Etsy one day, and I couldn’t stop drooling over them. At first, I couldn’t decided which I preferred: a stamp version, or a digital pdf version… both have great possibilities…

On one hand, I love the rubber stamp option… I can use it to stamp the envelopes on our Save The Dates, and possibly on our invitations. I could use it to stamp our favor bags… programs… the list could go on!

I love the stamps from Modern Art Stamps’ Etsy shop…

Lovestocreatestamps also has some beautiful designs… I’m particularly fond of this one:

On the other hand, the pdf graphics could be useful as well… programs, stickers… you name it!

I love the tree designs by WeddingMonograms

And the birds… (also by WeddingMonograms) are adorable!

Lovelogos’ shop is just too cute…

And then… I stumbled upon monograms by Foxglove Design, and the decision was made instantly… for $20 I received 4 different custom monograms… and they were oh-so-very perfect for our wedding (all images from Foxglove Design’s Etsy shop):

I LOVE how they are all a little different, and that I will be able to use them for a variety of projects! I ordered mine without our wedding date, so that I can continue to use them after the big day as well! You’ll see one of these beauties popping up again very soon, as it will be making an appearance on a very special piece of stationery!

Did you/are you planning on having a custom monogram created for your wedding? Did you use a digital file, or a stamp?

Cake Drama

  • January 25, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Ugh. I have gone back and forth over this for so long and cannot make a decision. So, I need your advice. See, I have this vision in my head of a beautiful cake on top of a pedestal cake stand. Only, I picked a cake that looks like this:

1

Source

See that square bottom? Apparently they do not make many pedestal cake stands in a square shape in the size that I need. I talked to my cake lady about this, and she offered me two solutions:

  1. Switch to all round layers and have my beloved pedestal cake stand, but this would mean 10-12 fewer slices of cake.
  2. Use a traditional square silver cake stand that is elegant, but not really vintage, which is the look I’m going for.

I’ve gone over my guest list and am trying to determine just how many people will come so that I can see if it will matter much if I lose the 10-12 additional pieces. But there are so many unknowns! This person might come and this other person might not, but I really won’t know until our RSVPs are due (and those of you that are married are laughing at me thinking, ‘Yeah right, people will respond to you by the RSVP date.’ I know, I know, but a girl can dream). So, see this is a huge dilemma and one that I still don’t have a solution for.

And there is another problem, too. Miss French Fries posted a picture of the most beautiful cake I’ve ever seen in my life and now it’s all that I can think about.

2

Source

So moving to the round layers is fine with me. I’m just worried about losing pieces of cake.

And then there’s this. I just keep dreaming about these beauties:

3

Source

So, what should I do?

Option A: Use the pedestal cake stand and hope that the lost pieces of cake won’t matter. I mean, hey, we’ll have a groom’s cake, too.

Option B: Suck it up and use a silver cake stand. And get a pedestal cake stand for my home so I stop crying about it.

Home Party Planning: Party Favors

  • January 25, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Mr. Nachos and I were talking today about what to do with the silver heart tins that we acquired through our lucky centerpiece find

1

I initially thought about filling them with customized M&Ms because I like the thought of giving something edible. I looked up prices and they were ridiculous! I also learned that my future mother-in-law had the same idea and after she did her research, she came to the same conclusion.

Anywhere from $50-100 for a 5 pound bag is simply not justifiable. Then I thought about Hershey kisses and looked into having those custom-made with a sticker or a tag. Again, a little too steep, price-wise. So then I thought I could make little stickers to throw on the bottom of them and customize them myself! I Googled “personalize Hershey kisses” and learned that a 3/4″ round sticker would be the perfect size. I downloaded the template for Avery 5408 labels and got to work in PowerPoint…

First I inserted the circle from auto shapes, double clicked on it and made the height and width .75″…

2

Then I inserted another auto shapes circle, changed the line to a heavy dotted line after double clicking, made it blue, and resized it so it fit evenly inside the black circle…

3

Then I added 2 different kinds of word art and played around with the curve and the size of the font (using font Bell Mt) until it fit perfectly…

4

I added a text box in the middle using the font “Harrington”…

5

And I added a few little symbols on each side to fill in the blanks…

6

The version that has our real names is a little more symmetrical because our names are the same size as the bottom font. Anywho, from there I saved this as a JPEG, opened up the Avery template, inserted the picture a dozen times and placed the pic over the circles that show in the template…

7

Once I have the labels, I plan to print them and stick them to the bottom of each Hershey Kiss. Yeah, it sounds like a fun Saturday afternoon in front of a girly movie in my PJs! I’m going to hold off on buying the Hershey’s Kisses because I don’t want to give away bad chocolate… that would be a crime punishable by law. So for now, the hard part is finished, and seriously? The idea came out of nowhere but I’m happy I thought of it!

Are you keeping yourself busy like me, coming up with random DIY projects that you didn’t originally plan to do?

Frickin’ Invites, I Give Up

  • January 22, 2010 at 10:52 pm

After I figured out my flip-flop debacle, I was feeling like I could conquer any DIY project that was dreamt up in my little noggin! But I have to tell you, our home party invites have seriously become a pain in the pooper. My original plan was to make them myself to save a bunch of money. If you remember, they started like this…

1

Then they morphed from this, which I don’t think I’ve shown you…

2

Then I changed them to this because I liked the tent card better…

3

But I couldn’t get the picture quality just right. So I thought I’d have Walgreens print the pics and I could attach them somehow to the card. But I couldn’t come up with a design I liked, and it was REALLY starting to bug me! So yesterday, I bit the bullet and decided to order them online. At this point, I’m so much happier paying someone to do them for me! I made 2 different ones and I took everyone’s advice and changed the wording a little so no one thinks I’m expecting. :) I made this one on Shutterfly and ordered just one to see how it looks in person. It should be here next week…

4

5

(source)

And I made this one on VistaPrint. I like this one because it’s the exact design I was trying to make on my own…

6

7

(source)

I changed the wording on the inside to black though, because it was an extra charge for color, and honestly, at this point I really don’t care what color the wording is, I just want them finished! I also wanted to order just one, but the minimum was 10, and I had a coupon for 50% off so it really wasn’t a big deal. I figure if we end up going with the other invite, I could always cut off the inside and give the photo portion to my family members if they want them. I do still plan on making the RSVP cards myself though, which I KNOW won’t be hard.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to put this project into the hands of professionals. Being rid of the stress of figuring it out myself is worth every penny to me.

Did you attempt a DIY project to save money and fail miserably like I did? Did you turn to a professional, or scrap the idea altogether?

Board #457: Tomatoes and Twine

  • January 20, 2010 at 11:30 am

Today I’m skipping right over spring and into summer, with an inspiration board that I think could work just as well for an intimate dinner party as for a larger wedding celebration…

As much as I’m a sucker for gorgeous floral arrangements, I also know that they’re not always friendly on a budget. Splurge on a gorgeous bouquet for the bride, smaller nosegays for bridesmaids, and then save by choosing non-floral centerpieces. Tomatoes (accented with breadsticks and olives) are not only eye-catching, they’re also totally budget friendly when used in-season.* Send them home with local guests at the end of the party. Display a small layer cake on a beautiful stand that you’ll be able to use over and over after the wedding is over; use this cake for cutting, and save by serving several less-expensive sheet versions of the same cake. Twine in all its forms is an incredibly cheap element that can be used throughout the wedding, from the invitations to the bouquets to the utensils.

*Buy little baskets like these from the Texas Basket Company for around 50-cents apiece (good for any kind of farmers market centerpiece or favors, from tomatoes to berries to nuts).

Board #456: Juliet and Blue

  • January 19, 2010 at 11:30 am

I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring. Waking up to gray skies and a cold for the past couple of days has me looking forward to sunshine, warmer temperatures, and spending time outdoors. But, in the meantime, a sweet garden wedding inspiration board will have to do.

Mood: garden romance
Palette: garden green, Juliet pink, powder blue

{click image to enlarge}

Top row from left: potted herbs and garden rose centerpiece, stamped favor bags, and dogwood wedding cake all from Martha Stewart Weddings, champagne photo by Elizabeth Messina
Row 2: bouquet with Juliet roses and rose hips by Ariella Chezar, Alberta Ferretti cap sleeve dress from Brides
Row 3: blue linen and lace ring pillow from Martha Stewart Weddings, gray bridesmaid dresses from InStyle Weddings, cocktail tables, rose arch from Moosey’s Country Garden

We’ve been talking lately about keeping things simple, and not over-thinking your wedding design choices, but isn’t that so much easier said than done? Especially when there are so many ideas out there that you love! And looking at wedding blogs and magazines, it’s easy to start thinking about your wedding as though it were a Tim Walker photo or an Anthropologie catalog. But it isn’t.

So how to keep things simple? First, remember that this is not the last party you’ll ever have, and making your own jam or envelope liners will certainly be much more manageable when there aren’t so many people on the guest list.

Second, learn to edit. Choose two things instead of twelve (not limiting yourself to colors), and you’ll find it easy to create a cohesive look, especially when you choose elements that make sense for your wedding’s venue and season). Lemons and paperwhites, persimmons and porcelain, confetti and cake, and today Juliet roses and powder blue, are a few examples of pairings that I’ve used to create inspiration boards. I don’t box myself in with them (the bridesmaid dresses here are gray, not blue, and the centerpieces aren’t Juliet roses), but I use them as a guide. What are pairings that you’d like to see, or that you’re using for your own wedding?

DIY Confetti Containers

  • January 18, 2010 at 8:30 pm

I know I wasn’t the only one going crazy for the adorable Michigan wedding we featured last week. Besides being ridiculously charming, it was loaded with sweet, steal-worthy details that could easily be translated to any wedding style.

Well, fortunately for all of us, the bride was kind enough to stop by with a super do-able DIY project for the darling little confetti containers she made for her own wedding. From Sarah

PAPER FUNNELS FOR CONFETTI OR ROSE PETALS

Materials needed:

Thickish Paper (I used the luxe fino cream cover weight paper from paper source)
Double stick tape
Xacto Knife or Paper cutter
Ink Jet printer

1. I used the creme paper from Paper-Source and printed a pattern on both sides of an 8.5″ x 11″ paper. However you could also use any two sided patterned paper (usually found in scrapbooking supplies)

2. Cut the paper down to 6″ squares.

3. Dog ear the paper on one edge about 1″ in, so that the folded part runs to a point at the corner.

4. Run double stick tape along the folded edge.

5. Take the opposite corner from the folded edge and the most folded in corner and bring them together. (then press down so the double stick tape sticks)

6. Then create your labels. I again printed on plain paper.

7. Cut the labels out. (mine say… After “I Do” Please shower the newlyweds as they walk down the aisle)

8. I used double stick tape to then adhere the labels as well.

9. Then fill them with confetti or rose petals. I had them in baskets for people to pick up at the ceremony.
