Bridesmaids’ Dresses: to Match or Not to Match…

  • December 26, 2010 at 8:10 pm

I am so torn about bridesmaids’ dresses. I am having a fairly large bridal party because no one told me about the 50:1 (guests: bridesmaid) rule. Under this rule, I should only have one, possibly two bridesmaids. I have SIX! That being said, I have no idea how to dress them for the big day. I kind of miss the days of mandatory matching bridesmaids’ dresses! There are SOOO many options.

1. The traditional matching dresses (I LOVE THESE!)

2. The same style in different colors

{source}

3. The same color but with a choices of two or three styles

{source}

4. The same color family, no prints, but generally bridesmaid’s choice

{source}

5. Color scheme but complete bridesmaid’s choice

6. Matching prints

7. Mismatched prints

I am not sure what dresses to pick, but I do have a few criteria:

  • Costs less than $100
  • Short and lightweight, since it is a daytime beach wedding
  • Light colored (in the pink, champagne, or blush family)
  • Preferably not strapless

I really love the look of matching dresses, but I love the idea of letting my bridesmaids pick their own dresses. I feel like if they pick their own dresses they are more likely to wear them again. Also, my bridesmaids are all such different shapes and sizes that I wouldn’t know how to pick a dress that would look good on all of them. (I definitely want everyone to look A-MAZING on my big day; I am not one of those brides! Hehe.) On the other hand, because my bridesmaids look so different I kind of like the idea of having dresses that make them look more unified. I feel like that makes them more special.

Additionally, three of my bridesmaids have already said they hate pink and will need a lot of help finding a dress. They made it clear that they are more than happy to wear a pink dress for me—they just don’t know how to pick a good pink dress. My sister basically laughed at me when I asked her if she would prefer to pick her own dress because she hasn’t worn a dress in years and claims to have never worn pink!

It seems like my best bet would be to pick two or three styles in the same color (family?) and let the bridesmaids choose the ones they like best. I feel like this really addresses the majority of my concerns and my bridesmaids’ concerns. The only problem is, where can I find two or three dresses in the same color that cost less than $100? I am under the impression, based on a very preliminary search, that I won’t be able to find dresses under $100 at a bridal/bridesmaids’ dress store…i.e., David’s Bridal, Dessy, or J. Crew. Am I wrong?

David’s Bridal Spring 2011 Line

  • December 26, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I know I owe you guys photos of our finished STDs (which I can’t wait to share), but you’ll have to hold off a little bit longer…until I can find my missing camera cord. ;)

I got an email yesterday from David’s announcing that they had new styles available.  I personally had a fantastic David’s experience, but from what I gather it really depends on what store you go to. Either way, I plan on talking about it a lot more after the holidays, so let’s wait until then . :)

For now, I’d love to share some of these dresses with you guys! I was pleasantly surprised when looking over the 2011 line. There are some very fashion forward dresses and a few that I like quite a bit (but not too much—not more than my dress, of course). If you guys are in the midst of dress shopping (good luck!) and haven’t given up yet (just kidding), you might want to look over a few of these lovelies!

All photos are screen shots from the David’s Bridal website.

Here are my favorites. The entire line can be seen here.

Anybody else secretly look at dresses after they purchased theirs?

Black Swan Inspiration Board

Drawn to the dark side – escape from a world of beautiful ballet and enter into the dramatic.  Bold shades of night separate the bridezillas from the brides, while pops of cool turquoise offset vibrant coral (inspired by Natalie Portman’s glowing eyes in full Black Swan regalia).  Find your balance between the power of an inky gown and the soft airiness of a ballerina with Black Swan as your muse.

Engagement-Photo Tips

  • December 23, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I’m a planner, and as such I did a fair amount of Internet research before our engagement shoot. Stalking Viewing other people’s photos gave me ideas about outfits, accessories, and poses. There’s a plethora of advice out there on how to prepare for your session, but here are a few tips that we found really helpful:

1. Be true to yourself. If you normally wear flip flops, it probably isn’t a good idea to use this as an opportunity to wear four-inch stilettos. Wear clothes, shoes, and accessories that scream “you.” If you’re comfortable in your own skin, that confidence will translate to the photos. For example, these were our “casual” outfits:

You might be going “Whaaaaaa? That’s super dressy!” But, these clothes reflected our personal styles, and I love how they turned out!

2. Coordinate. Your own outfit, but also with your fiance’s outfit. In the eternal words of Stacy London and Clinton Kelly: “It doesn’t have to MATCH, it has to GO!”

3. Color. I’ve read in many places that jewel tones (e.g., emerald, ruby, sapphire) photograph well and also tend to look good with any complexion. Avoid loud, distracting prints, and also bright whites…huh? Didn’t Mr. Tartlet wear a white suit in your photos? Yep, we ignored that last bit of advice, and for the most part it worked out just fine. However, there were a small handful that had a distinct Touched by an Angel look:

Engagement-Photo Tips : wedding engagement pictures rochester Epic Br EPic_Br

Whoopsie. Well, he’s one hot angel!

4. Hair. Now is so not the time to experiment. If you plan on getting your hair cut, do it well before the photo session so it has time to relax into the new style. Don’t be like Mr. Tartlet, who was late to the shoot because he was getting his hair cut. That’s my guy.

5. Makeup. Even if you’re like me and don’t wear makeup regularly, I highly recommend wearing some for the session. If you’re a fellow sufferer of shiny-forehead syndrome, my weapon of choice is Laura Mercier’s Smooth Focus Pressed Setting Powder. I’m pretty sure Photoshop editing can achieve similar effects (I’m no expert), but getting dolled up made me feel sassy and more confident!

6. Nails. The photographer will likely want a close-up shot of your ring. As such, nails should be clean, and make sure your hands aren’t super dry. Manicures aren’t necessary, but if you’re looking for an excuse, this would be a great one!

7. Bring chapstick. Your lips may get really dry after all those smooches. Along the same lines, I wish I had brought a bottle of water because I was super parched by the end of the session.

How did you prepare for your engagement photos?

Board #509: Eggnog and Gold

  • December 22, 2010 at 12:30 pm

I couldn’t let December get away without posting at least one inspiration board, and I knew it had to be a Christmas-y, winter-y one! Right now, I’m loving white and gold – it’s warm and rich, yet it can be surprisingly simple. Here, I’ve imagined decorating with wreaths on the doors and windows, pillar candles on the table, and whimsical menus and stationery. Instead of nutmeg, garnish eggnog with tiny flakes of edible gold. Instead of a traditional wedding cake, how about a gingerbread “town square” cake? A long-sleeved lace dress is a perfectly timeless choice for a winter bride.

Mood: winter warm, sweet and simple
Palette: golden ochre, eggnog white

A Stand Worth Taking?

  • December 20, 2010 at 11:41 pm

I was talking to Mr. Pancakes about cakes the other day and trying to drag an opinion out of him. As usual, I had about 15 tabs open on my browser, and I asked him to come take a look.

This is the cake I showed him (which I happen to love).

A Stand Worth Taking? :  wedding cake costa rica decor Green W  {Source}

To my surprise (and horror), he said he hated cake stands. Well, his exact words were, “That cake is fine, but I don’t like that thing it’s on. Would it have to be like that?”

I kind of hate when this happens. I really wasn’t trying to trap him; I hadn’t even thought about the cake stand. I was really just trying to get his opinion on the cake, and the thing is, I adore vintage pedestal cake stands. They are so precious and really complete the image of my perfect wedding cake. Am I crazy? Are they weird??

If we were having a huge 200-person wedding, I would not dream of putting that cake on a stand, but we’re not. We’re having a small, intimate wedding, and I think that a smaller cake deserves (needs) to be put on a pedestal so it can get the attention it deserves.

What do you think of vintage cake stands? How much thought have you put into what your cake will sit on?
