Favorite Weddings of 2009 VI

  • December 31, 2009 at 6:13 pm

We’ve had SUCH a variety of stylish weddings in our list of faves. I was so surprised no one picked the same wedding… each member of the SMP team had a completely unique affair in mind when we asked them to tell us about their favorite wedding. Much like the rest of us, Shawna, one of our fabulous LBB research colleagues, was head over heels for more than one, but in the end this super chic NYC wedding was still calling her name.

From Shawna…

This is it, the moment I fell in love with anemones and loft weddings. I’m a happy girl when there is a whole day feature on a wedding that is so flawless and classic.

Tara really did it right when she incorporated the fancy modern calligraphy in a mostly black and white scheme. This important detail added tons of style to her wedding.

I love that the CB2 table runner brings in a large floral element to the table without actually doing large florals. This wedding made me keep checking back on SMP for more throughout the day….the ideas are so do-able!

You can read more about the couple and their vision behind the day right here in the original post from March (we know the wedding’s not from 2009, but that’s when we featured it so it’s fair game).

Favorite Weddings of 2009 V

  • December 31, 2009 at 4:21 pm

There are so many stunning weddings out there we could literally do this every week! I have a new favorite wedding just about every other day. But the fun part about this (besides of course, the amazing weddings) is seeing the all different choices and styles the SMP staff really connected with, everyone had something different to share…

From LBB research colleague, Alicia…

I am completely smitten with this wedding! I grew up in New England, so when I think about getting married in Rhode Island, Newport is the first thing that comes to mind. It is the quintessential sailing town, with a mix of quaint boutiques and upscale restaurants.

Kristin Spencer 2

The pictures of this wedding make it seem like just that, the perfect mix of elegant and fun. Besides the fact that the bride is stunning and her gown is to die for, this wedding to me, looks like one that you wish you had been lucky enough to attend. The venue is Belle Mer which is located on Goat Island, alongside the Newport Bridge.

Kristin Spencer 1

I am loving the sophisticated black and white color scheme, those cute little fingerprint details, and that amazing ballroom drenched in warm up-lighting! Everything is just so elegant. You can absolutely tell this couple has great style and created one truly spectacular event! So fun!!!!

Top 10 Bridezilla Weddings of the Decade

  • December 31, 2009 at 12:07 am

We’re on the brink of a new decade! During the last ten years, we’ve seen some of the most extravagant bridezilla weddings ever. Before the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins, let’s take a look at our favorite bridezillas.

10. Star Jones

star jones wedding picture bridezilla.jpg

The ultimate bridezilla got her 2004 wedding to Al Reynolds sponsored by plugging products on The View. How tacky. Three years later, she divorced because she was “tired of footing the bill.” Um….

9. Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

tomandkatie_bridezillas__300x418,0.jpg

Katie Holmes isn’t the bridezilla, it’s Tom Cruise. Long ago, we gave him the title of biggest bridezilla of all time because of his Napoleon complex and control issues. Katie can’t even wear heels! His couch jumping proclamation of love started it all and the story had its storybook ending with a grand $2 million dollar wedding in Lake Bracciano, Italy. The couple spent $180,000 on wine and champagne. Groan.

8. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey

Only a detail-oriented bridezilla could pull off this fairytale wedding. Simpson had to be one of those girls who carried a wedding binder around in high-school. To add to her bridezilla street cred, Simpson wrote a book about having a celebrity-style wedding on a budget, titled I Do: Achieving Your Dream Wedding. (There was nothing “cheap” at her wedding, except for Lachey) The couple divorced a few years later.

7. Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar

elizabeth-hurley-wedding.jpg

Hurley was rumored to have worn 13 different dresses at her $2.5 million dollar wedding to Arun Nayar. More than two dresses makes you a bridezilla in our book.

6. Speidi

heidi-montag-spencer-pratt-wedding bridezilla.jpg

One Hollywood name, two weddings, countless reality shows. Need we say more? There’s no question in our minds that Speidi is one of the biggest bridezillas of the decade, after all, in 2008 we awarded him bridezilla of the year. But who’s the bigger bridezilla, Spencer or Heidi?

5. Melania Knauss and Donald Trump

knausstrump wedding bridezillas.jpg

Donald Trump does everything big, so it’s no surprise that he went for the big bridezilla wedding. The couple spent a whopping $500,000 on flowers that likely wilted days later. Try and Trump that.

4. Madonna and Guy Ritchie

madonna+and+guy ritchie wedding.jpg

Madonna and Guy Ritchie had a $1.5 million dollar wedding in the year 2000 at Skibo Castle in Scotland. Always the trend setter, after Madonna’s Scottish soiree, castle weddings were en vogue. The couple divorced in 2008.

3. Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt

Brad-Pitt-And-Jennifer-Aniston-s-Wedding-Picture-Unwanted-2.jpg

Remember how much everyone adored Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt? Their wedding was a lavish $1 million dollar Hollywood soiree with champagne and lobster. The star-studded guest list included Cameron Diaz and Courteney Cox. Money doesn’t buy love. They divorced in 2006.

2. Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones

catherine+and+michael+hold+hands.jpg

They spent $100,000 on mouth watering Godiva Chocolate wedding favors and he proposed with a 10-carat marquise diamond. On their wedding day, the Mumbles in Swansea, Catherine’s birthplace lined the streets with flags and banners. You know you’re a bridezilla if your hometown has a small parade for your wedding!

1. Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren

tiger_woods-elin-marriage - wedding.jpg

$1.5 million dollar wedding in 2004. A reception featuring entertainment by Hootie and the Blowfish. A massive fireworks display and a-list celebrity guests. What happened during the vows that lead to Woods cheating with nasty diner waitresses five years later? Money can’t buy true love!

Accessorizing on the Cheap

  • December 30, 2009 at 7:13 pm

I didn’t feel much of a need to splurge on accessories—they were either going to be gifts from family members (a South Asian custom), or bought on the cheap.

I wasn’t sure what Papa Spaniel would come back home with from his trip to Pakistan (if anything), so I made sure to have some back-ups on hand. First were the earrings. I knew I wanted something big, gold, and kind of over the top, so I picked up these from Bluefly.

Cost to me: FREE, with a gift certificate I won to Bluefly from Weddingbee over the summer!

I didn’t want to wear a necklace with my strapless, straight-across dress, but I definitely wanted some bangles, and I happened to find these on sale at Gilt a few months ago.

Armita Singh bangles (source)

Cost to me: $36, and I’ve already got a ton of use out of them.

Since I’m not buying any other pieces, my total jewelry cost is $36. I wasn’t expecting to spend much, but that’s even better than I’d hoped. :)

I might as well tell you about my shoes, while I’m at it. I found these on sale at Nine West before I’d actually bought my dress, but I waited on them until after the purchase was made… and then they were no longer available in the store. But I knew I had to have them, because they were the most comfortable heels I’ve tried on in a long time! Luckily I could still find them on the website for a little while longer!

Expressor by Nine West (source)

Cost to me: approximately $40, and I will definitely wear these again after the wedding.

So if we’re counting, that means that all of my accessories (the ones above, plus my veil which is borrowed, my purse which was $78, and my hair comb which was $72) cost me a grand total of $226. I could definitely have skipped the clutch and spent less, but I think it wasn’t too bad… it leaves me with $750 for alterations, hair and makeup before I hit my budget. So unless I gain or lose a lot of weight quickly, I think I’m good! :)

Did you find any great deals on your accessories?

How to Stay Sane

  • December 28, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Wedding planning can be a crazy, crazy experience. There is inspiration coming in from a million different directions, 100 different things to remember at a time, and so, so, so much to execute all in one DAY. It’s easy to feel like this sometimes:

(source)

I’ve learned that the more organized I am, the less scatter-brained I become. Well, obviously. :) But staying organized as a bride can be difficult! Photos, contracts, pages from countless wedding magazines, color and fabric swatches, business cards, websites, bookmarks, wedding blogs, Knottie bios, photography blogs, and on and on and on!

In order to maintain bridal sanity, you’ve got to avoid this situation like the plague:

(source)

Most brides have at least a binder with contracts, magazine pages, and other physical evidence that planning a wedding leaves in its tracks. I am no exception. My binder is (purposefully) quite small, though – only 1 inch wide. I regularly sort through it, keeping only what is absolutely pertinent to the wedding at that point in time. For example, in the early stages of planning, I had all of my inspiration photos neatly ordered. Now that I have my dress, my veils, my flowers, and other decor elements picked out, I get rid of those inspiration photos.

But what is SO much more important to me than my planning binder is the “Wedding” folder on my desktop. 50 megabytes filled with years of wedding planning (yes years, because I was saving inspiration photos long before we were engaged). :)

Inside the Wedding folder are multiple other folders which often house even more folders. Here, take a peek inside my world:

The folders include basically every aspect of planning:

  • Accessories - including jewelry, veils, bags for the big day
  • Centerpieces – reception decor including florals and candles
  • Church – with pictures of our church and any information downloaded or saved including marriage preparation
  • Cookies, Cake, Candy – includes inspiration for our cake and our cookie table/candy buffet combination as well as our cake topper!
  • Flowers – as in personal flowers like bouquets, corsages, and bouts
  • Hair – including hair and make up inspiration
  • Hotel Info & Menus – includes pictures of our reception, floor plans and seating charts, details on the reception cost, and information on our hotel blocks
  • Invitations – including the details on our awesome invites
  • Lighting – with inspiration pictures
  • Miscellaneous – with information on the trolley rental, hair salons, our DJ, and linen rentals
  • Logistics – an important folder: it contains all of our guest lists (ours and our parents’), our mailing labels, and our wedding weekend schedule (under construction, obviously)
  • Music – with our song database to choose from, our DJ information as well as other brides’ playlists I’ve saved over the years (couldn’t risk forgetting an awesome song!)
  • Photographs – with inspiration pictures from all over the web of both engagement and wedding pictures
  • The Dress – self explanatory :)
  • The Men – tuxedo information and gift ideas
  • The Women – pictures of the different dresses my girls chose, as well as some remaining inspiration pictures I went off of initially

and last but certainly not least, my baby:

  • DIY Stuff:

With folders for each of my pet projects, this is my favorite folder :) You’ve seen a lot of my projects so far, but there are many more to come – as well as lots of complete tutorials for the projects you’ve already seen.

And THAT’S how I stay organized! Oh, and of course I back this bad boy up about once every month or two, especially if I’ve been extra busy lately!

How do you keep sane during wedding planning?

Wants and Needs… and Wants.

  • December 28, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Two years ago, before I started reading wedding blogs, I never even would have known that this item existed. It is totally unnecessary, but absolutely, incredibly beautiful nonetheless. It is elegant, classic, and architectural, yet soft. It comes in a variety of wonderful colors. It makes me swoon.

However, it is also expensive. Very expensive. And probably will have much less of an impact on the look of the reception than, say, the addition of lighting. Oh and did I mention that it’s unnecessary?

What is this amazing item?

It’s a chair.

Yes, a chair.

A chivari chair, to be specific. Take a gander at this beauty:

(source)

Sigh.

You might be thinking, so what, it’s just a chair. Trust me, I know. I know that there is absolutely NO WAY to justify the cost of this upgrade. Cheeseburger Mom and I just laughed about it on the phone the other day. She says no one will notice our venues chairs once the room is all set up. I said she’s probably right. She said that there are lots of other things we could spend the money on. I completely agreed.

I just can’t get these chairs out of my head!

This is not a novel problem. Lots of brides struggle with this same decision: case in point. But that doesn’t make it any easier for me now that it’s my turn. :)

I tried to be rational and logical. I made a Pros and Cons list.

Pros: pretty, classy, elegant, makes me happy (what!? that’s a pro! ;) , people might notice them, “they complete” the look of our perfect reception

Cons: expensive, unnecessary, people might not think the venue chairs are that bad (see below), requires Friday delivery and seating pad assembly on each chair at the venue, expensive, unnecessary

So, yeah, even though that list clearly points to a big old NOPE, my hope lingers on that I will a) win the lottery, b) inherit some money, c) win a chair donation contest, or d) GET OVER THIS CHAIR ISSUE :)

Just so that we’re being fair, here are our venue’s chairs:

(they are pretty green, huh? – source)

And that gorgeous chivari chair one. last. time. -

What’s a girl to do? Help me out, hive!
